I'm happy to see SThomas is still Folding -- I built his machine. It is a single core Athlon 64.

Thanks! Good to be here. Folding is fun. SPCR provided a lot of the design and component ideas for two of my machines, so I'm glad to help. Is there somewhere I can read about the bonus structure? I'd love to understand why I'm getting so many more points than the WUs have assigned to them.

Hey, great to have you on board. Here's a link about the bonus program: http://foldingforum.org/viewtopic.php?f=58&t=13160
That's the basic description for standard smp folding, bigadv also has bonuses, but not for gpus as of yet. Although if you read further on that bulletin board, it sounds like they're working on getting bonuses for gpus up and running. Let us know if you have any more questions!

Thanks, frenchie and warriorpoet.

Is it just me, or does anyone else find that their hardware decisions are influenced (crazily) by Folding? I just built a new machine to replace my main office PC. I was planning to turn the old box into a low-powered file server or something (really I was), but now all I can think about are bigadv work units and the CPUs that can run them...

Well, if it matters, I'm pretty sure that Venice will run SMP alright, but I don't think bigadv are going to do so well ;)

Yeah, the Venice box is the one that's getting new guts. i7-2600k can handle bigadv, right?

Yep, an i7-2600k will do bigadv jobs. My best performer is an i7-2600k, heavily overclocked, up to 4.8Ghz, I think. Although to be fair, it's running linux, and linux seems more efficient for bigadv jobs, and the machine is otherwise pretty lightly loaded. Running up the clock speed really helps, I'd recommend getting the best cooler you can and cranking it up as much as you can.

As far as folding determining machines, well, I've always been a fan of getting machines that are a lot more powerful than I need, and folding just gives me an excuse. :D
