Noisey, but cheap overall.

The Frys PNY unit is sold out. I suspect a lot of people bought them just for the rebate, and now are trying to sell them on eBay for a more absurd amount, in order to pocket $25-$30.

Allright, thanks Aristide. I'm on it tomorrow.

Think it will work with an A64 3200 with 512 memory?

BTW, any experience with XFX rebates?

Just remember, noisey!

Hmmm, you know I have not been in a situation where my video card held more memory than my main memory? If your already running cpu folding how much memory is used? Left over? By the way what kind of memory are we talking about? 512 ain't much.

No experience with XFX or their rebate center, but it's not rebates411.com, which really throws tons of hurdles at a buyer. Several companies use them, including Biostar.

You don't like checking eBay on a regular basis? I got a dual slot 9600GSO on there for $50 shipped, but I had to wait a while.

I'm only considering the XFX because I have an Artic Cooler VGA cooler not in use right now.

when you say "noisy," just how noisy are we talking here?

I've actually never heard one, remarks based on 'Egg feedback. Gamers don't seem to mind too much, but we tend to use the thing flat out all the time. On my EVGA cards I set the fan to 65% duty no matter what. Some people don't like them.

Sending you a PM.

thanks for the links, aris.

i picked up a 9800 GT for (relatively) cheap wednesday evening at microcenter. that place is all over the map. sometimes they have ridiculous best buy type prices and sometimes they beat everybody. there was one 1gb card listed for $92 without rebates and they had another listing with 15 in stock of the same card for $134 with a $20 rebate. i splurged and got the 9800 GT since i had some store credit and it only cost me $30 out of pocket. Picked up an S1 rev 2 today for it.

on another note, i took possession of an old server case from work. it had an antec true 500W PSU circa 2003 in it. another antec case had 2 512 sticks of ram in it that i can use in the new folding box. so i am psyched right now. just gotta find time to put it together.

on another note, i probably will send off for the 9600 GSO you pointed out at newegg and try to stick it in my wife's computer for folding.

I saw a GSO that sold for $36, that was a deal, and like you said, no rebate. Haha.

Your GT has 16 more stream processors than a GSO, you'd be surprised how much more they are worth PPD wise.

My current fav is the GTX 260.

the 260 is really nice, saw those power charts you and some of the others had commented on around the forums. hope they come out with an aftermarket cooling solution for it soon.

given the evidence of your ability to convince others of your line of reasoning, perhaps you should look into taking the bar exam.

Oh yikes, no, don't do that. Get an Asus or an EVGA 125x series, they are the only ones confirmed by the companies to be 55nm.

Older 65nm GTX216s will pull another 30-40 watts out of the wall. Don't get them for 24/7 folding.

The thought of being a lawyer has crossed my mind, but its late for that. I may write a lengthy post on Off Topic about why people should fold.

I passed up a used GTX260 last night on eBay, I felt the lifetime warranty of a new EVGA card to be worth the price difference. It sold for $140 + $15 shipping.

Note - I can't fully agree with XbitLabs, I think the GTX260, the EVGA 1255, uses closer to 120 watts. I'm still happy with it.

you know, i was looking at that same card and debated that one versus the one i ended up ordering. in the end it came down to the warranty (xfx has a longer one than that particular evga model which only has a 90 day manufacturer warranty per newegg) as well as the minor difference in price with shipping and rebates factored in (~$10). if i get it and it's a 65 nm model, i might send it back and try with another company. or, i could just put it in my computer at work where i have no control over the freezing office a/c. then it would serve two purposes--space heater and folder.

Regular EVGA 260's cost $175 after rebate. Lifetime Warranty and 90 day trade up period, sans 15% restocking fee.

Odds that the fast 40nm's will be out within 90 days? Not good at all. NVidia is concentrating on notebook chips first.

Looking at the PNY 9600 with 768MB I wonder how many PPD the extra memory is worth. I was surprised to find out that the 9800GT may make as much as 5000 PPD. No PWM fan on the PNYs though, so that AC cooler become mandatory. :x

Couldn't you take a non-pwm fan and put it on a fanbus/fan controller? Then you could regulate it at will, albeit manually.

Using RivaTuner's logging to examine how much VRAM is being used, the most I've ever seen it allocate is about 405mb. Most WU's are 65-100 mb. Only the latest fah_core14.exe based WU's allocate the roughly 400mb from what I've seen. I asked about it on foldingforum and the reply I got back was basically that most likely even a 256mb card would be fine, just that it would do a little more swapping back to system RAM but that they didn't really think most users would see a performance difference. Either way, it does make a case for buying cards with at least 512mb if possible, but if you can get a good deal on something with 256 or 384mb, it's still a totally viable option.

Ah, it should kick in for something as opposed to cards with 384MB. Interesting.

GSOs are problematic. By that I mean the 384 and 768MB models have 96 streamers. Later NVidia reduced the stream processors to 64 on the 512, 1G, and 1.5G models. A criminal act in my opinion, it's so unethical.

I should have listened to you, aris. Ended up getting the 65 nm version of the 260. Installed yesterday and the thing is ridiculously hot (and long). Moved the fan up to 70% which keeps it less hot, but now i'm getting these "CoreStatus = 7A (122)" and "exception thrown during guarded run" errors all the time.

I'm going to rma the card, take the loss in $$ and get a 55nm evga. I'll stick with evga from here on.
