In a nutshell, it's a Stanford project that requires an incredible amount of computing power to determine how proteins "fold". To get that computing power, they've divided the work into little parts, and wrote a client that people can install on their computers. So, it's "distributed computing."
You install the folding client, and it goes out, gets a WU (work unit), and when your CPU is idle it crunches away at it. Once completed (and it can take hours or days), it sends the results and gets another.
The results are used by researchers to hopefully find ways to resolve some nasty protein-related diseases such as Alzheimers, Parkinson's, and various forms of cancer.

Any fantasies I have been harboring of catching you will from now on have to include a room full(er) of PCs.FJC wrote:LOL, I am blessed with quite a few computers (really, 4 good folders and a couple that are so slow they only complete a single WU per week).haysdb wrote: except for Frank Condron and PaleMelanesian, and I ain't catchin' THOSE two. I'll be bringing another 2Ghz system online within a week, and maybe more after that...
I am definitely ready to "disburse" the three extra PC's presently adorning my office to their new homes in my son's room, the home theater, and I'm not sure about the third one. What's funny is, I had JUST, and I do mean just, finished a quieting project on my desktop PC when I got interested in Folding@Home. I looked around and there was a Shuttle XPC sitting there doing absolutely nothing. I had built it to run Linux, to mess around with, but had lost interest and it was so noisy I just shut it off. I fired it back up, then the case of my HTPC arrived, and then I decided to build my son his own PC, and they are all sitting in my office. I've kinda gotten used to the noise, but it will be nice to have my peace and quiet back.

I might just catch PaleMelanesian after all, assuming our weekly production remains constant, which of course is always a shaky assumption. The only way I could increase my production AT ALL is to get my P3 notebook back online, but honestly, it's contribution was so minor, it just wasn't worth the electricity to keep it running. The other thing I can do to increase production is to STOP MESSING with my PC's and just leave them the hell alone. I'm always fiddling with something.

Even though the stat page is offline I'm green now too. Actually I hope to be yellow (or whatever you get for > 1,000) in a couple days
Now all you braggers out there, here is what I'm using:
1. AMD 2000+ XP @1.78 GHz
2. Celeron 2.4 @2.7 GHz
3. p3 850 @1.05 GHz
I might add another p3 to the mix, it might be 750 MHz model, I hope to overclock it to 950 or so.
Now, if only I could hook up my work machines to do folding:
1. Dual Xeon 2.2 Ghz with HyperThreading
2. Dual p3 1 GHz
3. Dual p3 750 MHz
But no hope due to strict corporate policies
Still, I should be over 1,000 pts a week if all goes well.
Now, there is this electricity bill...

btw guys.. has anyone had a recent drop in production? I used to have four CPUs (all Intels 1.7Xeon,1.7Xeon,2.26P4,733P3) and used to hit yellow once every two or three weeks..
..now I've added three more CPUs (all AMDs ~ 2GHz Bartons).. and I've introduced -forceasm for all of them but yet my PPW according to zerothelement only puts out about 1000 PPW.. surely that should be much more?
folding.stanford.edu does say I have seven CPUs.. but the production rate should be near double.. I should be hitting 2k PPW one every three or some weeks.
Are AMDs really that bad for folding? Should I disable -forceasm on the AMDs?
I wish the EOC stats were back..

I think I'm about the same, just shy of 1k PPW.
How recently did you add the new systems? Ya realize it does take a week of steady production to have your PPW settle out to the new level. I just added a P3-566 last weekend, should be enough to get me over 1k, but it has only turned in one WU so far. By middle of next week I should be seeing the effects of its contributions.

DonP,
Check the logs for your new machines to make sure they are completing good WU's and not trashing them and receiving few or no points. Only disable -forceasm if the log shows WU's being aborted.
Download Beta 4.00 and specify the -forceSSE option.
This isn't definitive, but the FAH LogStats program tells me that my slowest Intel machine, a P4B 2.4, is generating 583 PPW, whereas my Athlon 2000+ is doing 551. I have checked maybe three different WU's and the slower Athlon never trails the P4 by very much, so I conclude that the Athlons make competent Folders.
Oh, and no drop in production for me, as least not according to the last weeks statistics on Arachnid's Stats System.

When I get home tonight I plan to do an 'SPCR' skin that should work for everyone, especially those with longer names. Think I'm also going to turn off the color coding for the PPW. The white and yellow are just too hard to read with the current background, and I like the perfect color fade on the background too much to change it right now.haysdb wrote:Zyzzyx,
My signature line stats box has been "broken", and I liked yours so much that I plagiarized it, lock stock and barrel. If you will share with me how you do a "skin" I will modify mine a little to differentiate it from yours.
My only beef is it cuts off my name.
David
I'll also get you the info on setting up your own style.
Zyzzyx: Those new machines were added a day or so after stats at EOC went down.. so I think it's been over a week now.
(oh.. and I nicked your liquidninja skin too.. sorry )
haysdb:
Anyway.. we'll see.. if it's just me then I'll just have to get to those machines and put them at the business end of a baseball bat until they start to work.
Thanks guys.

haysdb:
Thanks for the advice.. I've thought about looking at the logs, I'm just too busy.. but I'll try and squeeze it in tomorrow. re:Beta4.. I'd rather not - these machines are the desktop machines of other people so I don't want to be running untested software and I won't have much access to fix them if something does break.haysdb wrote:Check the logs for your new machines to make sure they are completing good WU's and not trashing them and receiving few or no points. hmm.. I don;t know exact figures but I'd be very surprised if my P4B 2.26 was doing more than 500 PPW.. I reckon it's nearer 400.haysdb wrote:This isn't definitive, but the FAH LogStats program tells me that my slowest Intel machine, a P4B 2.4, is generating 583 PPW, whereas my Athlon 2000+ is doing 551.
Damn.. I'm still getting over the fact that Zyzzyx and sbabb overtook me a few weeks back.. I was hoping I'd be able to hold back mas92264, Frank_Condron and yourselfhaysdb wrote:Oh, and no drop in production for me, as least not according to the last weeks statistics on Arachnid's Stats System.

The topic, my good friend haysdb, was that I, WUSSBOY, had attained green status and was rather excited. So, rather silly, really. However, despite my best efforts at starting more thought-provoking threads, this one is far and away the most popular one I've ever started. I look at it as my baby. Grow, you little stinker! Grow!haysdb wrote:Bada bing, sigstats fixed. Neato.
What was the topic of this thread?

Well wussboy, by my count you are still green, and in one hell of a battle with Fastman and DaShiv. Less than 100 points separate the three of you, and your last weeks points are within 29. And up just two places is jvanlaven (with jinu117, who has apparently left the building, in between), producing fewer points per week, but far enough ahead in total points that it will take the three of you a couple of months to overtake him, at your current rates.
Unfortunately, you will loose more places than you gain over that time, as DonP, Frank_Condron, mas92264, and myself come THUNDERING past y'all.

Haysdb, if you could just wait until I can run out and get some Nyquil because I expect to catch a cold from breeze you're gonna make when you pass me.
As for you, Fastman and Dashiv, I shall now sneak into my sister's room to turn on her XP1700+. Mwuha ha ha haha!
Crap. I need a faster computer! Stupid T-Bird 800.
