Anybody found 4.0 Pre2 client unstable?

Post by ColdFlame » Mon Dec 08, 2003 10:36 am

I've started running 4.0 clients for some time and I've got different clients on all my machines. I've got 3.24, 4.0 Pre1 and 4.0 Pre2.

I've found 4.0 Pre2 to give LINCS and EARLY_UNIT_END all the time on my overclocked p3. It only does it on 4.0 Pre2. I reverted that machine back to 3.24 and problems stopped.

Anyone encountered this problem?

The reason I'm curious is because 4.0 Pre1 seems to be more stable than Pre2.

I had 4.0Pre1 lockup on my P3-566 last night. Killed the WU, at 98% too. Figgered I'm not the kind to be doing that level of beta testing, went back to the 3.25 client.

Haven't even looked at 4.0Pre2

Had 2 black screen lockups over the weekend:

Pre1 -forceSSE -advmethods, wu #823, XP Pro, 2600 T'Bred, no oc

Pre2 -forceSSE -advmethods, wu #?, W2k, 2500 Bart, no oc

Both of which are weird as these 2 computers never locked up before. So for now I'm blaiming it on Beta and/or forceSSE. Did not have trouble with 3.24 -forceasm.

Reset and everything ok for now. Didn't loose the wu's.

Any suggestions? Other than the obvious - change back to 3.24.

I'd recommend changing to 3.25 if you have an AMD and use -forceasm.

The 3.24 client with that flag will use SSE for the first WU, then not use it for subsequent WU.

Looked for 3.25, but, no find? :(

Great - is 3.25 otherwise rock 'ard ? It's still labelled as 3.25 Beta.

PS. Damn you mas92264 (/me shakes his fist in the air) for overtaking me!! :)

I read the only change from 3.24 to 3.25 was enabling -forceasm in all WU's not just the first and that it was as stable as the previous one (not that exactly but that's supossed from the fact that they do recommend it and said it was stable)

Yeah, I've not had any problems with the 3.25 client. I've done somewhere around 200+ WU with it, no lockups or lost work.

On a sidenote, they do have a 1.54 version of Fahcore_78 out now. If you're going to be using version 4.00, you need at least 1.53. This info is in the log file, also neatly displayed by FAH Stats.

Heck Fire! Gotta stay ahead of Frank_Condron! And, who the heck is this guy? :x I'm practically out of breath trying to stay ahead of him.

OTOH, your're staying right with me, Don.

Good Luck!

Yeah.. I've been expecting it for some time and I was gonna pull a rabbit out of the hat (three 2.something dual Xeons) but it looks like I might not be able to pull it off :(
Still.. congrats and as long as the points that are used to overtake me are also being used to lift SPCR in the ratings then I'm happy.

Good Luck to you too .. you'll need it more than me with Frank_Condron on the prowl! I have no chance.. but maybe you can upgrade to 3.25 so _all_ your WUs will benefit from SSE? That may be enough to keep ahead of him (EOC is down again.. but I seem to remember your production rates were very similar).

I need to check my logs. I am running beta 4.0Pre1 on at least one Windows machine and the Linux box. I haven't suffered any BSOD's or lockups or anything, but I can't say for certain that all my WU's have completed successfully.
