Hello,

Are you overclocking (or undervolting) the machines that are having errors?

Nope, these are bone stock machines. I found a very long thread on the 0x7b error I experienced and it seems to be somewhat common with the SMP beta client.

Hello,

Ah, you are using the Windows SMP client? I did find it to be very unstable, and not particularly fast. On the same machine, the Linux SMP client is much faster, and more stable, too.

Thanks for the tip Neil. I just started running the linux SMP version in a vmware/xubuntu session. It is a lot more stable and surprisingly faster than the windows version even when run under vmware.

Next step will be to try it under a full linux install or perhaps under vmware esx server.

I "vote" for a native Linux boot, as long as you have the choice! Thanks for the team boost!

Don't worry, the high ppd output won't last long . I'm running fah on some idle test servers but they'll be in production soon enough. When that happens, my ppd will be dropping off quite dramatically...

One thing that has me quite disappointed is the large amount of communications errors and discarded WU's I keep seeing. It's not fun losing several k in points just from errors.

I've "folded" quite a bit in the past for dnetc and never saw these kinds of issues. Hope I'll get these solved and can soldier on for the team.
Wow, #1 with a bullet :!:

Just joined the team with an AMD x2 3600 24/7 with the windows SMP client.
Will also add our household puter (C2D 6420 oc'ed to 3,2 GHz) (but only part time, maybe 10/7)
I'm wondering which of the two machines will contribute more...

Thanks!
I've added so far the mentioned X2 3600 folding 24/7, two E4300 folding 12-20/7. Still pending is my oc'ed home E6420...
I'm curious to see the figures on how fast each is...

Hello,

I just joined up with the SPCR Folding team using the two machines in my sig at home as they are on 24/7 but only used during the day so I thought I'd put them to good use when idling away.

Thanks.

Welcome to SPCR Folds!

Your first work unit has shown up:

...but maybe there was a problem? 'Cuz it is only 1 point -- keep on Folding; it'll get much better.

Yea I noticed that, but I've been stuffing around with the GUI application and the SMP client.

Installed the SMP client last night (Brisbane, Australia) and it was sitting at around 90000 out of 500000 steps on Core1 and 50000 out of 500000 steps on Core2.

So we'll see what happens.

Hello,

I am a bit confused by the scoring system of this whole folding thing. I just started folding using the FAH504-Console and it downloaded a WU of 1000000 steps, now I loaded this into FAHMon to monitor progress and it has a preferred deadline of September 2 with a credit of 230 (!!) points.

Previously I was using the Windows SMP client (until my machine decided it was time to reboot) and was working on a WU with 500000 steps and it had a credit of ~1700 points.

So how do they actually figure out these scores, shouldn't WU's that are bigger score more points?

Thanks

Hey Guys,

I just joined the whole "Folding@Home" project. I also added SPCR's team number.

I have to say, how come I have never heard of this before? There should be a big worldwide campaign about this. I know for sure like 95% of the people never heard of this project. This is one of the easiest ways to contribute to a good cause.

Any way, this is my first post on SPCR as well. I recently discovered SPCR when I started ordering my new system a week ago and was aiming to build a quiet system (I will post pics en specs later when I received it all, waiting on the E6750 chip).

I wanne say you guys have done a great job with SPCR and the forum. I've hours and hours reading usefull forum topics here and helped me alot with buying the good gear for my system. Keep up the good work guys and cya around! :D

There is a lot more to it, than the number of steps -- the complexity of the molecule and what it is doing at each step, all are different for each project. There are different cores, and many different projects. The points are awarded based on how a particular machine handles it -- and different CPU's run them at different speeds.

Thanks for the explanation, I am still new to this and unsure of how the points system actually works.

I just finished my first WU 10 minutes ago and am now folding away 24/7 pretty much.

Thanks

Hi again,

I have a question about which client I should be using. I have a C2D 6400, I read somewhere that I should use the SMP client. Should I run that or the F@H Console, and also, should I run multiple copies of the SMP or the Console client?

Thanks

You should run the SMP client. It handles multiple cores, so you only need 1 copy.

Alright, thanks for that.

Now, does anyone know how to use the GPU client? I have the ATI X1950 Pro that I thought I'd put to good use. I have started it up with the -gpu 0 -local -verbosity 9 parameters, it gets to the "Starting GUI server" line and then it doesn't seem to go any further...

Also, does any one know of any tool that minimizes a command window to the notification area?

Thanks a lot guys!

Hello ohlenc & welcome to SPCR Folds!

http://folding.extremeoverclocking.com/ ... =&u=262931

To answer about the GPU client -- it really cannot be run at the same time as the SMP client, as it requires a fair bit of the CPU. You could run the GPU with the single CPU client, but the GPU client doesn't shut off automatically when you want to use the machine. And, I think the SMP client is faster, anyway.

So, I'd stick with the SMP client, if you can run it.

Hi,

I'm a bit disappointed with the SMP client, this morning when I woke up I went to check if it had completed the WU it was working on when I went to bed (it was at ~80%), when I check FAHMon it had downloaded a new WU so I thought great, I'll check my stats, to my surprise they had not changed so I checked the log and found that at 95% it had a checksum error and ultimately got the FILE_IO_ERROR.

What would cause checksum errors and FILE_IO_ERROR (apart from bad hard drives, which mine aren't as they are brand new and they are working fine)

Thanks.

Hi, I see you have a pretty heavy OC on the machine in your sig. Is it 12 hours Orthos stable? Any problems with heat or stability? Have you run any health checks on the hard drives?
If you remember the project number you can check the FAH forums or google and see if anyone else has had that error with that WU.

Here's a good place to start, with error codes and descriptions:
http://fahwiki.net/index.php/CoreStatus_codes

Good luck, don't give up!

Hello,

Yes this OC is 24 hours Orthos stable, haven't had any stability issues at all, hovering around 55*C. My hard drives are healthy, have no issues with them and they pass all checks.

I'll check the forums for any known issues with the project that failed and see.

Thanks,

Hello,

Well, the SMP client is a Beta after all -- are you running the Windows or Linux version?

G'Day

I am running Windows, and yeah it is a beta so I'll keep folding and hopefully get some WU's completed. As I have seen others that have successfully done it.

Thanks.,

Well it seems that it was just a one-off issue with my SMP client failing at 95% as I finished another one perfectly fine this morning.

So it's all good and the folding goes on and on :P
