First foray into replacing my power supply

Post by duncanmorris » Fri Jan 15, 2010 1:40 pm

Hi all.

This is my first time fiddling with my computer. I have to admit, i think I'm going to enjoy it.

I have a dirt cheap desktop that started sounding like a vacuum cleaner. I have narrowed it down to the power supply. I'll admit I then blindly bought something that I hoped would replace it. The new power supply is far too big and doesn't fit in the case! I thought before I try again, I'd get a bit of advice, so here I am.

The (noisy) power supply has a Golden Field logo on it. It is called a Pentium IV & PFC Model:ATX-420WB&P4 and labels it as an ATX switching power supply.

I haven't been able to find it online which makes it very hard for me to know what to replace it with.

I'd be very grateful if someone could suggest a suitable alternative (i'm in the UK). My case only had three external screws if that helps.

Thanks for your replies. The power supply looks like the ones linked to, but then they all look somewhat similar!

The dimensions are 12.5cm x 10cm x 7.5cm (depth).

The replacement was a Rasurbo DLP 430W Quiet PSU which I bought without really thinking about whether it would fit.

I'm just looking for something cheap and relatively quiet. The system is a very simple one with few requirement - no gaming or anything.

Any help is greatly appreciated.
