Rubber washer locations, a simple yet intriguing question...

Screw > Rubber Washer > Case > Fan

or,

Screw > Case > Rubber Washer > Fan.

in other words, should I stick my rubber washers on the inside or outside of the case? the inside would stop the fan clatering against the case, but the outside will stop the metal screws banging against it. is there any preferred way?

I have them: screw-case-washer-fan.

I figured that if the fan vibrations get absorbed it wouldn't resonate to the case. It's almost never the (tightened) screws that cause vibrating sounds, almost always a loose sidepanel, or something rattling because it isn't tightly fitted to the case.

screw > washer > case > washer > fan.

I tried that, but my screws weren't long enough for that.

Throw the screws away.....they transmit vibrations to the case. Use two zip-ties and two rubber washers per screw hole. You don't want the fan frame to touch anything.
