Big difference with a newer PSU?

Post by El Duderino » Wed Apr 23, 2008 3:38 pm

Hey SPCRers, a new guy has seen the light (and gotten annoyed by its noisy wave acoustics), just signed on board... on to my question:

I've managed to get my PC fairly quiet to my ears with the help of Zalmans on the CPU and GPU (see signature). Now it seems that my PSU is one of the more loud components, it's a 4-5 years old Antec TruePower 480W... I looked in its manual and search on the net but couldn't find anything about its dB-levels. It seems to be spinning in ~1200 rpm in idle. Would changing to, for example, a Corsair HX520 make a big difference?

Thanks 8)

Hello & welcome to SPCR,

That's fairly easy: try the new Enermax's (Modu82+ and Pro82+) or a SeaSonic, or the Fortron Source Green. All of these are very quiet, and they have 120mm fans, to better assist in ventilating the case. The Enermax's in particular, are very efficient and have active PFC.
