I've just been told that silentpcreview is a good place to ask this, so here goes.
I'm looking to upgrade my Debian Linux home server mobo/cpu. Requirements are:
1. 1*Gbit and 1*100Mbit (or higher) NICs, by add-on card if necessary;
2. 2*SATA;
3. Enough horsepower to sustain, hopefully, 20 Megabyte/sec min Samba performance over the Gbit network, noting the drives are aes-256 encrypted (Linux luks);
5. Quiet, i.e. fanless or fan which I can replace if it is/when it becomes noticeable over the drives and large case fans;
6. Given all this, as low power as possible.
I'm thinking VIA C7 or Nano for its hardware aes (Geode only seems to do 128 bit). Available in England there seems to be quite a selection from VIA and Jetway, from the iDOT PC2500E - which I'd probably saturate if I added a PCI Gb NIC - to the Nano-based VB8001, which seems to have a fan horribly attached to the heatsink.
Any of you guys with a similar setup, and what kind of real-world server performance have you got? Am I reasonable to expect the above with a 1GHz fanless C7/Nano, say?
