need help with HTPC sound system

Post by misenlai » Sat Dec 19, 2009 11:45 pm

I'm new when it comes to sound... any advice

BUDGET RANGE: $1500-$1600 total, basically $1000 for the HTPC and 600$ for the sound system After Rebates

SYSTEM USAGE FROM MOST TO LEAST IMPORTANT: riping/playing dvd and blueray, medium gaming, good quaility/clarity sounds

PARTS ALREADY HAVE: connecting to 46" LCD in the living room

This is the wish list i built so far:
http://secure.newegg.com/WishList/Publi ... r=16934527

However, I'm not familiar with sound system; I think I need a good speakers set, receiver, amplifier. But i'm totally new to that. We also live in a small apartment and noise is a problem. Looking for good quality and clarity sound. I'm looking at this Logitech Z-5500. But it doesn't have amplifier ..etc...
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6836121120

Any suggestion? Sounds system budget is around $600

For home audio set up, I would recommend a A/V receiver and speaker separates. It leaves room for expansion if you get a larger listening space down the line, and will be able to play the latest blu-ray audio (provided you have the right software on your htpc. the radeon 57xx series does bitstream)

newegg has a nice special going on right now on speakers:

Energy Take 5 plus polk powered sub

For an AV receiver, the Onkyo 507 is on sale at newegg as well for about $270:

That will allow you to connect your htpc to it via hdmi and process the audio.

For lots of great details head over to the avs forums for the latest on htpc tech and home audio. you could get lost there for hours if so inclined.
