Need advice on building quiet gaming pc

Post by gr3y » Sun May 16, 2010 3:33 am

Hi,

I need advice on building a quiet gaming PC and a good LCD.

Budget: No limit. – Main aim is to make this machine quiet..most of the time.
I don't care if its a bit noisy when under load(playing games) but the rest of the time I want it to be quiet.

Needs to be able to survive in 32 degree heat...

I'm mainly looking at being able to run:

Starcraft 2
Bad Company 2
Dragon Age
Mass Effect 2
Batman: Arkham Asylum.

Here is the starting build:

CPU: AMD AM3 Phenom II X4 955BE
CPU HSF: Zalman CNPS10X Performa
Mobo: Gigabyte MA770TA-UD3
RAM: G.Skill-NT 4GB DDR3-1333
SSD: G.Skill Falcon II 64GB SSD
HDD: Samsung Spinpoint F3 1TB
GFX: Gigabyte 9800GT Silent Cell – Surely there is something faster and quiet.
Case: Antec P183
PSU: No CLUE????
ODD: Lite-ON DVD burner

OS: Windows 7 Home Premium 64bit

Thanks in advance

grab a sapphire vapor-x card, 5850 or 5870, they seem to be a good compromise of quiet and fast

Also, grab a couple of fans from the recommended list to replace the existing ones.
For the PSU, check the recommended list too.

Ok,

So far this is what the NEW configuration looks like:

CPU: AMD Phenom II X6 1090T Black Edition,
CPU HSF: Noctua D14
Mobo: Gigabyte MA770TA-UD3
RAM: G.Skill-NT 4GB DDR3-1333 ( might need more memory if I am running 6 cpus ? )
SSD: G.Skill Falcon II 64GB SSD
HDD: Samsung Spinpoint F3 1TB
GFX: Gigabyte 9800GT Silent Cell – still deciding on whats good.
Case: Fractal Design Define R2 Black Pearl
PSU: Corsair VX-450
ODD: Lite-On IHAS324 24x DVDRW Black
FANS: Nexus Real Silent 120mm Fans (5 pack)

Monitor: 23" LG W2343T-PF $199

OS: Windows 7 Home Premium 64bit

I think I may need more ram and I still need to decide on what is the best GFX card for this setup.

Looks good.

For the GPU, if you don't mind mounting an aftermarket heatsink, get any GPU that's compatible with the Accelero S1 and you're good to go !!

I just installed an Accelero S1 onto a non-reference HD5770 (the Asus CuCore model that MSY sells). It fits with plenty of room to spare, and runs passively just fine with my case's slow spinning fans. This is while overclocked to 960MHz @ 1.264v by the way. :)

Idle temp is around the 40c mark. Max temp in Furmark is over 80c, but in actual real-world games it never goes above 65c.
