Can anyone recommend software?

Post by Deezer » Mon Mar 01, 2010 3:49 am

Hi All,

I'm new to the HTPC market so I'm doing my research before committing my money.
Can anyone recommend some 'Must Have' software that any respectable HTPC shouldn't be without?

I will use mine for recording from a DVB-S card (not sure which one yet.)
Also it will be a 'server' for Video, Music & Photos.

Thanks,
Darren

MythTV, Open Source DVR

The best part is that you don't have to commit any money!

You can achieve all the other tasks you list with free software too.

This looks great thanks.

I have so much to learn

I'm thinking about using Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit.... is this a good idea?

Any reason you want to use W7 Ultimate over the cheaper W7 versions?

Take a look at mediaportal too if you're set on using Windows. It's also free. Of the three PVR/etc. suites I've tried (MythTV, SageTV, MP) I've had the best luck with MP though it's far from perfect.

I can get an upgrade copy of Win 7 Ultimate 64 for about £60 GBP.
The other versions are cheaper but this does seem a good deal.
I'm hoping it's a good base to build upon.

Thanks for your input

MythTV is actually a linux solution, but an easy to use one. You could get a bunch of movies with that £60 GBP instead.

Mediabrowser (WMC plugin for media organization)
Arcsoft Totalmedia Theater 3 (Blu Ray)
DVD Shrink
Metabrowser (TV/DVD metadata getter)

A good forum for reading, but not newbie friendly and its hard to get a question answered.

I am using MythTV for almost two years now and so far it didn't give me any problems while using it. I am actually making a research paper and writing an essay (a freelance writing job) about these type software and how can they benefit the users.
