Can [plugging] fan while power is on damage PWM managment ?

Post by leo11173 » Sun Sep 25, 2011 11:16 am

Hello SPCR,
This is my 1st post and i have been reading the forums for about 3 months.

I tryed to search answer for that question, but unluckyly i did not found the answer.

The question : Can pluging/unpluging various 3/4 pins fan into a 4 pin pwm mb slot while the computer is powered damage the motherboard ?

Why i ask this question : i wanted to try some fans because the one i was using was not able to go bellow 1100 RPM. I tryed about 3 or 4 different pwm and non pwm fan on my motherboard fan cpu connector and some minutes after i realized that i wasn't anymore able to control the fan speed of my cpu fan. I though that it was a speedfan problem but even with speedfan removed Q-fan enabled on bios the cpu fan look like stuck to hafl speed despite temperature change.

I came to the conclusion that connecting fans while the computer was powered may have damaged the motherboard pwm managment system. Can someone confirm me if this theory is possible or not ?

I appologies for my english which is not very good. I hope it's not a pain to read.

Regards,
Léo
