Help me to build a very quiet PC

Post by FreeWolF » Fri May 13, 2016 6:03 am

Hello!!!

I have to build a new PC and I would like to build a VERY silent PC. I don't want to hear it when run.

I have choosed the following configuration:

Asus H170-PRO Intel
INTEL Core I7-6700T 2,8 gHz LGA1151 8MB cache Tray
Kingston HyperX Fury Kit 16 GB, 2x8 GB, 2133 MHz, DDR4, Non-ECC CL14 DIMM, for Skylake
HyperX Fury SHFS37A/480G SSD Gaming da 2.5", 480 GB, SATA3
Asus GeForce Strix-GTX960 4 GB DDR3 SDRAM, PCI-E,
Fractal Design Define R5
Noctua NH-D15
Cooler Master V650 PSU 650W,
Logitech MX Master Mouse Wireless
Asus PB287Q Monitor da 28"/71.12 cm, Wide Screen, 16:9, WLED/TN, 3840x2160

That configuration is ok? Or the power supply and the CPU fan can be most quiet?

P.s. I DON'T WANT a liquid cooling and I play FPS games.

Thanks id advance!!

Welcome to SPCR.

For games at 2160p, instead of an i7 T CPU and a GTX 960, you are better off with an i5-6600 and a higher performance gfx card. Note, the GTX 1070/1080 are out next month(ish). If you play at 1080p on your 2160p monitor, then an i5 and the GTX 960 will do. In either case, an i7 (and especially a clock and thermally limited i7) adds little to no value.

What's your budget and country of origin?

Noise: The gaming graphic card will always be the noisiest component.

The Noctua cooler is overkill for an i5 or an i7 T. Scythe Kotetsu is better fit.

Ideally, as Steve said, i5 6400/6500/6600(K) and wait for the GTX 1070.

Where are you located ? I'm a fan of the acoustics of the Shadow Rock Slim or Dark Rock 3, as I usually can't hear that 135mm fan. If you're lucky enough to have Scythe available around you, those are highly regarded, so are a few Thermalright coolers.

PSU wise, I'm not too familiar with CM. EVGA G2/P2 have a nice fanless mode for low to medium loads, so does Corsair 's RMx and RMi PSUs. Otherwise, you have Be Quiet that has the straight power and Dark Power Pro lines that are almost always quiet

For the SSD, check out Crucial (not all their models are great though) , Samsung EVO, SanDisk Extreme Pro, Intel 730 and the like. Compare prices and reviews

Thanks a lot for the replies!!
I'm from Italy, and my budget depends how money I can get from the selling of my actual Pc, but I don't change my Pc every year, and I am willing to spend a little more.

Can you write clearly wich components are right for me?

Updated pc config:

Asus H170-PRO Intel
INTEL CORE i5-6600 LGA1151 *
Kingston HyperX Fury Kit 16 GB, 2x8 GB, 2133 MHz, DDR4, Non-ECC CL14 DIMM, for Skylake
HyperX Fury SHFS37A/480G SSD Gaming da 2.5", 480 GB, SATA3
Asus GeForce Strix-GTX960 4 GB DDR3 SDRAM, PCI-E,
Fractal Design Define R5
Noctua NH-D15
Cooler Master V650 PSU 650W,
Logitech MX Master Mouse Wireless
Asus PB287Q Monitor da 28"/71.12 cm, Wide Screen, 16:9, WLED/TN, 3840x2160

Clearly, wich CPU FAN, POWER SUPPLY AND CASE could I buy?

I will don't do any OC and for now I'm not interested to play in 4K, I need a new monitor because the current I have is going to die, and because I will keep it for many years (most of motherboards , video card and various cpu) I take a 4k.

Here's a decent build for 1080p gaming: http://it.pcpartpicker.com/p/pvMDCJ

Save some money on the case, cooler and RAM and spend a little more on the SSD.

- Go with the Fractal Define S if you don't have an optical drive, go with the R5 if you do.
- Kotetsu is quieter than the Noctua for this 65W CPU.
- Don't need 16GB of RAM for gaming. You can always add 2 more sticks later if the need arises.
- the be quiet psu is excellent.

gfx card: Both the Asus Strix and MSI gaming are good choices. I prefer the MSI first.

Thanks a lot again!

Question: the MSI video card is more quiet than the asus?

And, what do you think, is better an Asus motherboard or Asrock is a good choice?

gfx card: I think they are too close to say which will be quieter in your setup.

mobo:
- Both have good bios based fan control. A year ago, I would have said Asrock is better for it. Now, Asus has implemented a much improved version...but it comes with growing pains...might not be completely debugged. If you want to control the fans via Windows software, then Asus is better.
- Asrock boards tend to have lower idle power.
