I had an idea that seems brilliant. So brilliant, that I'm sure someone else has done it, and I'd like to know where and how.

It seems that if you had a flash drive with a linux install on it that just had OpenSSH and VCN, you could plug in to (almost) any computer in the world and access your home computer like you were sitting at your own desk. Surely someone has done this. Anyone have any links?

Cheers.

Why do I always come here and ask questions before searching the internet? Sorry everyone.

In case you're interested, the answer seems to lie here:

They use a USB drive and a LiveCD combination. Having to have both with you seems a bit of a pain, but I'd also guess that most computers won't boot off of a USB drive.

Usually you don't have the option to boot the random system you are on. Just download putty on the random windows box and ssh from there. It doesn't require any installation so it should be usable on restricted boxes.
