Linux?

Post by regal196 » Tue Feb 06, 2007 11:50 am

Would anyone be as kind to suggest a Linux distro that would be appropriate to use as a print server and minimum uses web server. I will be running it on a old P3 (can't remember the speed) with 128mb of memory. If you need any other info, just tell me.

Thanks in advance.

What are your Linux skills ?

But the usual answer is : the distro you'll have the best suppor for.
If your best friend use Linux, choose his distro.

Sounds like debian would be a good idea (the stable version if it supports your printer).

Absolutely zero.

I need something very simple.

nightmorph no offense please, I have no idea what you mean after the first sentence, so if you can dumb it down for me, that would be much appreciated.

Oh, and most all Linux distro are free, correct?

You might want to check out Ubuntu, which is free and has a community forum and some decent documentation online. It's built on debian, and should be failrly easy to get working (as long as you're prepared to spend a bit of time learning).

I'd shy away from Gentoo until such time as you're confident with a command line. It's really powerful, but takes a lot more knowedge to run. Good community support, but not ideal from those new to GNU/Linux.
