Some varieties of plastic sheet stock FYI

Post by Felger Carbon » Tue Feb 20, 2007 1:11 pm

Some varieties of plastic sheet stock FYI. I used 1/16" thick to provide a standard comparison; thicker sheets are always available. For thinner, don't forget to check the availability of "strips".

mcmaster.com
1/16" sheet 12" x 12" price, page #

Delrin 6.62 3458 slippery
Polyethelene 5.06 3465 slippery
Nylon 4.16 3455 slippery
-------------
Polycarbonate 3.70 3450 clear (eyeglasses)
ABS 3.36 3447 beige or black
Acrylic 2.31 3444 (.060") (carbide tooling!!)
HDPE 2.07 3463 {HD = high density}
LDPE 1.92 3462 soft, not scratch resistant
(UHMW)Polypropylene 1.60 3439
PETG 1.58 3449

page 3450 has right-angle polycarbonate stock, .050" thick, 1/2" x 1/2", 1" x 1", 1.5" x 1.5", in 2ft and 4ft lengths. Useful with flat sheets to build square tubes and boxes... if a suitable adhesive is at hand. Super glue? Doesn't work on nylon. The other plastics? I dunno yet. I'm gonna find out!

1/16" polycarbonate sheet is rated as "burglar resistant"!

Some of these plastics are available in "strips" (such as 1" or 4" wide), in various thin dimensions, mostly in 5ft minimum lengths (probably use a shipping tube, slightly more expensive shipping).

Every plastic I've tested "cuts" easily with a Dremel cutting wheel, which actually melts the plastic, producing a very clean "cut" with some melt residue that can be easily trimmed. No dust! I sacrificed some old eyeglasses to test polycarbonate, and it cuts clean as a whistle.

McMasters will not provide the shipping charges until they put the shipment together (and ship it), meaning you have to give them the order first. If you don't like it, go away. I've found their shipping charges to be uniformly low and fair.

Comments? I've got a lot to learn! :D
