This is my #1 vote -- The Vicious Cycle!. The exchange between Rusty & SpyderCat is absolutely precious, evoking chuckles, guffaws & howls even from non-geek, non-SPC folks. Comedy at its most absurd best. I've printed it out to save.

I don't remember the actual thread I read this in, but a week ago I was shopping online at GoogleGear.com for a hard drive and I added an 80GB Barracuda V to my cart. Well, I made it all the way to checkout and right when I was about to click the submit button, for some reason I had this nagging feeling to check back on these forums again, just to make sure that I was making the right purchase.

And lo and behold!!! - someone here posted a comment in a thread mentioning that the 60GB cudas use only one platter and are a bit quieter, while the 80GB+ hard drives use two platters.

So, long story short, I switched out my cart at googlegear at the last second and bought that 60GB hard drive instead. I don't know how big of a difference the sound actually is, probably not THAT big of a difference, but I suppose every bit counts. And it's good to know that I was able to avoid the frustration of wondering "what if" later on, if I bought that supposedly louder 80GB hard drive instead.

So I'd say that that particular thread, whenever I find it, is my personal fav.

My personal fav has to be the Castration Band thread.

The favorite quote from that whole thread: "You must really hate your cows... "

I think that a hard drive in a vacuum would work. How about water cool the hd. All you have is two hose going into the vacuum. Also, wouldn't the hd work better? There won't be any air resistance so the disk can spin freely and the head could move back and forth quicker?

Nope, remember that the heads float across the surface of the disk on a cushion of air. No air and the heads would drag along the surface, leaving pretty little scratches

Even normal 3.5" desktop Harddrive? They must have change the design somewhere along the way.

Nope, some things haven't changed.

The drives spin faster, the heads are smaller and there are more of them, but they still operate the same way.
