removing stock intel 478 HSF

Post by Stephen » Fri Apr 06, 2007 9:42 am

I'm looking for directions on how to remove the stock HSF from a P4 socket 478. There are two levers which I unlkatched. The HSF doesn't lift off. What else do I need to do?

The Thermal Interface Material they use hardens and turns into something like wax, almost gluing the HS to the CPU. Easiest way to loosen it up is to point a hot hair dryer at it for a minute. This softens the TIM. Then twist the HSF gently and try to easy it off.

The stock 478 HSF is a %!#& to get off, I ripped my P4 2.6 out of the socket trying. See this guide:

you have to unhook the 4 retainer clips from the sides of the heatsink, and like Mike says, the stock TIM can set hard like a rock.

My standard P4 MO is to unplug the heastink fan, boot up the computer, then shut it right down. That generally warms up the TIM enough so the heatsink will pop right off.
