Here's some interesting news:

And I learned more about LCD's, like how they generate color; cool.

LCDs are unique in that they are one of the first applications where electricity is used to make an area darker.

Finally some of the new LED back lighted LCD TVs are using an acceptable amount of electricity.

I bought an Acer 18.5" LED-backlit display for my laptop this year and was astonished it claims to only use about 10 watts in normal usage. Very cool and quiet too. This is almost as big an improvement as LCD was compared to CRT.

I wouldn't go as far as to replace an existing monitor unless it actually died, however. OLED technology is another area which has tremendous potential.

If you run the backlight at 25% of current levels, seems like one of the side benefits would be greatly reduced flashlighting and clouding. yay.

I traveled millions of miles--correction--thousands of miles to see this new LCD technology, and now I find that the computer doesn't respond when I speak into the mouse? Oh well, might as well grab Spock and get some Italian food.

I wonder how long it will take before this reduces the price of monitors and TVs? And if it reduces the price, I wonder how much? Interesting technology, though. I bet the people who invented the CRT TV never even dreamed that we'd have something like this! :D

My 22'' led backlit lcd uses about 14w.
It will be hard to do any better, but something must be done for IPS panels which have better quality but require more power (50-80w).

You can get a 46" Sharp HDTV with an IPS panel that uses 80W. Seems like they should be able to scale down for monitor use.

Keep in mind that the power draw of LCD monitors may be measured in terms of 'typical usage' or 'maximum draw'.

The Sharp model in that link draws up 133 watts, which is still very very good for its size.
