Should you really be reading this right now?

It seems to me that as this forum grows, more and more of the activity is occuring during the day, on weekdays.

Once upon a time I'd check in on this place once a week to see a new post or two, now I could check every hour.

(Oh, and for you new kids out there, the Aug 12, 2002 date is the date we switched to the new forum code, not the date SPRC started. Everyone who was here at the time got their joined dates reset to that. Some were here long before I was. MikeC made his first post to complain about how loud William the Conqueror was, in 1066A.D. But I digress....)

So it occured to me that I bet alot of us are surfing the forum while we're at work. While we should be working Or perhaps while some of activity is coming from people who are at school, and should be learning something.

I did browse/post from work, when I still was working (back to my studies again). Maybe this isn't the most work-related forum, but I didn't mind, neither did my boss.

I think these forums are not the ones that school kids hang around (if they do even hang in forums...) I think most teenagers either look for mp3s or pr0n from the 'Net, or hang in chatrooms.

Cheers,

Jan

Your mostly right Jan, I was probably the only person at my high school who spent 2+ periods a day surfing forums online.

I'm not sure what to vote; I did look at the forums back when I was working, and technically I'm always at school now so of course I'm browsing from school. And for school... since I'm majoring in Computer Science (or possibly Computer Engineering if I figure out the difference and which one is better) I can easily argue that these forums are educational and relevant :)

Yep, I probably waste 2-3 hours per day at work on the web in some fashion. If its not SPCR, its something else. I still get my work done, and I am still the best programmer in the dept. I just don't need 8 hours a day to do my job and do it well. Hard to imagine what I would do if I worked the whole time.

No its not! you'd keel over out of boredom, your code would turn into a disjointed mess and your work would cost more time for others to fix than you spent writing it.

How's that for rationalization.

Very nice Zhentar, could you write an email to my boss?

If I actually spent my full 8 hours doing AutoCAD I think I would go insane. Thank god for the ability to Alt-Tab.

That reminds me - I have a ton of work to do!!

And thanks for forums that have similar color schemes to our company's site. :D

You need to add another choice to that poll: "I couldn't post from work even if I wanted to because not only are there no computers within 500yds of where I work, the few that do exist are P90's with nothing but LAN access and even if there were computers available my boss is always on my ass and I can't even think about talking to a co-worker, let alone being able to actually sit down while I'm working to be able to use a computer".

So I just voted no.

Ralf,

I tried putting that in the poll orignally, but it wouldn't fit>

So instead I put in the "but I would if I could". I figured it said the same thing, only in a less "Falling Down" sort of way.

Rusty is now officially as throughly useless as he says I am. Resistance is futile my friends...

Where do you work Ralf? that sounds pretty bad.

And I'm glad to hear there's so much SPCR history I've missed, all that money I've saved.....

Yes, the SPCR colour scheme is great for not drawing too much attention to what I'm doing, as it could (almost) be a Word document I'm reading (from a distance, if you squint, with one eye closed, while having a bright light shone in your face    )

And I'm very gratified to see that a majority of us are wasting company time like me, rather than precious home time. If I did this at home all the time I think I'd have a divorce by now

Have you ever considered using Ghostzilla ? I like it.

Looks awesome, but unfortunately I can't seem to get it to connect to the internet, in spite of using the same proxies as IE. It must be something to do with our restrictive firewall, as we can't even use progs like MSN messenger here.

Oh well....

Doesn't work real well if the management's monitoring method is looking at reports from the firewall hits that come from your IP address and determining usage. Yeah, I know most places don't have the time/resources for that, but do you know for sure if your company does or doesn't?

Bad problem with this place is every little smiley and graphic is a separate "hit" count. I checked my report (I work in the IT Dept) one day and I had 3,847 hits to forums.silentpcreview.com. :!:

As you work in the IT department, its important that you check these forums regularly. As they contain information to potentially effectively reduce noise levels of office machines, which in turn will reduce stress and increase productivity, information gathered on these forums could be a valuable contribution to your workplace.

Zhent, what exactly are you going to school for?

I'm guessing that you're working on your B.S. degree.

But works pretty well if you have it set up to connect to a proxy you installed on one of your coworker's computer.

Not that I ever did that but...

Well, seeing as we're fairly small (30 employees), and there's really only 2 of us in IT (1 being myself), I'm quite sure that we don't have any logging as such. Heck, even if we did, I know we wouldnt' have the time to review them.

Well m8's I voted because of several reasons, mainly cos I don’t feel one shred, one cell count in my body of guilt for doing so, we get no breaks, yes no 10 or 15 minute by state and federal law breaks at all, unless of course you smoke, then you can smoke twice a day. I also do not lean against the watercooler and engage in the morning gossip about what kind of beef stew I made the previous night or who may be sleeping with whom in town, well you get the idea.

I try to watch my time and split it up between SPCR, Polycount and working on my 40k Quake3 warhammer skin, plus of course I get all my work done each day too. I am nervous thought cos they just upgraded to XP and in a benign sort of way stated we are now being monitored on our web usage. I will let you know if I get documented, hehe.

Ps Also I have never once voluntarily viewed porn at work or home, only have a 28.8 connection at home, and have never downloaded it, just FYI. :}

Hey go Rusty nice string here, and poor Ralf what a bummer P90's are dinosaurs too btw.

At a former employer we all got called into the managers office to grilled for our "wasting company time" by surfing the internet and playing games on our PC's.

The manager's office had a window behind his desk, so you could see in the window a reflection of what was up on his monitor. And what incredibly important managerial task was he apparently working on just before the meeting?

Solitare.

Sometimes life imitates a Dilbert strip.

Which only reinforces my belief that anyone who gets a job in corporate america should be required to read Dilbert and watch Office Space as a part of their orientation training.
