8800 GT - all passive, fully clocked, sickness in a can
Sparkle Luvs Me
Check that out. It is also on their website. It isnt called a GT on their website however. That made me nervous... read the specs... it is a GT they just mislabled it.
now to couple that with the proper cpu. that will be tough as even the 45nm intel, the quads, suck up a lot of power. power to performance is meaningless when the power negates silence. Of course, this forum has gotten flooded with kiddie types using high clocked 8800gts's and high powered intel cores, so maybe this is no longer much of a concern.
where's the amd Kuma dual core and 30 watt motherboard I read about?

LOL, although some may view that as being somewhat condescending!~El~Jefe~ wrote:now to couple that with the proper cpu. that will be tough as even the 45nm intel, the quads, suck up a lot of power. power to performance is meaningless when the power negates silence. As for the Intel quads, 3GHz on 65nm is easy to manage silently from my experience. Judging by the Penryn data released today I’d say that 3.65GHz plus should be no problem with silence.

The time is getting ripe for an SPCR shootout of quiet performance graphics. I nominate the following:
8800GT reference card + HR-03 (passive)
8800GT reference card + HR-03 + suitable fan
Sparkle 8800GT "Cool pipe 3" (passive)
Sparkle 8800GT "Cool pipe 3" + suitable fan
These could be pitched against the upcoming ATI HD 3850/3870 (to be announced in 2 weeks) in similar passive and active configurations. That would be a VERY interesting review ...

the ATI is going to be 55nm ... and using AMD's technology for once.
we never had a real AMD card yet. We were robbed of the 65nm r600 and instead got a room heater that couldnt perform like an 8800gtx which uses less power
yes, it is going to be a good battle. I can say though that amd so royally screwed me with dropping the SUPPORT for all-in-wonder ( i have 3 cards!) as well as making severely buggy drivers, as WELL AS not being able to control proper video resolution scaling like a 90 dollar nvidia card can... that well, I hope the ati solution is not good and costs more. Being mildly unwealthy makes for hard decisions with these things.
Why not be a silent snob, eh? the site isnt called mildly noisy gaming pc review. Also, the word "silent" gets thrown around. No noise is silent. A piece of wood sitting on a shelf is silent. A fan on a penryn is not silent. relatively quiet at best. I wonder if they will release dual cores on 45nm with half penryn cache built on (not disabled). THAT would be the passive beast.

I’m very surprised to hear you say that. I classify silent CPU cooling as being a setup that is completely inaudible whilst I am sitting at my desk at 3 in the morning when the ambient noise level is at its lowest. By that criterion I can silently cool a 3GHz Q6600 so I expect to be able to silently cool a Penryn at well over 3.5GHz.~El~Jefe~ wrote:Why not be a silent snob, eh? the site isnt called mildly noisy gaming pc review. If my PC was sitting on my desktop rather than at the side of the desk then I suspect it would be audible, but where you choose to locate a PC is an important part of the equation.
Definitely, they will be the replacements for the E4x00 series but don’t expect them for something like 6 to 9 months I suspect.~El~Jefe~ wrote:I wonder if they will release dual cores on 45nm with half penryn cache built on (not disabled). THAT would be the passive beast.

"so owned!" - strogg taunt in quake wars video game
Anyways, it looks like Sparkle is leading the pack in terms of notable cards and benches.
I have noticed that the early samples/issues of cards are sometimes passive and then all of a sudden, they drop off the face of the geek earth. I think it has to do with higher price to make them combined with people shoving them in in stagnant cases and claiming warranties. THis makes me really itchy on the trigger to get one. I will wait though to see the performance and idle wattage of ATI/amd's new card.

price is a concern
Can anyoyone tell me why the passively cooled card is that expensive? I checked the prices in Germany and the passive version of the card is 110 eur more expensive than the normal version from the same company.
I mean I love the fact that they made a passive version of the card and I am among the people who are willing to spend a bit more cash for silence but this is just excessive. It makes much more sense to me to buy a good aftermarket cooler such as HR03 which is half as expensive.
Or am I missing something?

nVidia are going to bring out a new hash of the GTX which will of course be faster than the brand new GT.

Inquirer is behind the news for only a couple of days, but is seems like eternity.
As of right now nvidia still has G80 GTS 640MB with 96SPs in retail channels. However, nVidia decided silently to increase the number of SPs in those cards up to 112. Additionally nvidia is going to release new G92 based GTS with 128SPs and 512/1024MB memory (I suppose these will be faster than GTX/ULTRA). And there are rumors about 1Teraflop nvidia card being in development, the next 9800GTX probably.
So for now here's complete 8800 lineup:
1. G80 8800GTS 320MB no longer produced
2. G80 8800GTS 640MB 96SPs still in retail channels but no longer produced
3. G80 8800GTS 640MB 112SPs this one is replacing old one with 96SPs see above, I suppose it will have a very short run as it will probably use "defective" GTX cores or "good" GTS cores
4. G80 8800GTX/ULTRA fate unknown, but I suspect they are no longer produced as new G92 GTS (see below) will make them obsolete
5. G92 8800GT 512MB currently on sale
6. G92 8800GT 256MB will be on sale shortly
7. G92 8800GTS 512MB will be out November/December
8. G92 8800GTS 1024MB will be out November/December
Can you say it's a mess? And there is new teraflop card from nVidia on the horizon...

This is why I hate graphics card company's, they just release too many cards, and then they make "new" versions of old cards: New card, new performance, same damned name Bastards.
So the bottom line is that everyone is going nuts about the new "great" 8800GT, which wont be "great" for long at all. And again they ahve managed to piss of the nutty crowd (<1%) who actually bought the overpriced Ultra that is going to get beaten by the new GTX.
I liked the old days, the whole lineup not just the top 3rd.
MX420
MX440
MX460
GeForce 2 GTS
GeForce 2 Ultra
This whas when the lineup was sensible, after this point hundereds of different specs, names and code names appeared and disapeared, and here we are with the GeForce 8 line of 30+ specs of cards, with even more cards being modified (overclocked) by various partners.
I dont really follow the graphics card market at all anymore (I like not having headaches), can someone who does follow it tell me what to reccomend to a friend of mine for a new system to be built in a couple of months time for about £150, the old 8800GTS 640MB with 96-SU's was what I suggested (with a side note to wait for the new Radeon card), now I have to wait for the new Radeon card, and a new GeForce GTX. Bugger.!!!

If he has to buy right now then 8800GT 512MB. In US retailers are gouging price on it from $250MSRP up to $300, but it is still cheaper than 640MB GTS. I suppose situation in England will be similar. Despite lower price 8800GT is faster than 640MB GTS in almost every benchmark, the only times it loses is at very high resolutions with aggressive AA/AF settings where larger memory bandwidth comes into play. However as long as you friend doesn't play at 1920x1200 with maxed out AA and AF 8800GT will be faster.andyb wrote: I dont really follow the graphics card market at all anymore (I like not having headaches), can someone who does follow it tell me what to reccomend to a friend of mine for a new system to be built in a couple of months time for about £150, the old 8800GTS 640MB with 96-SU's was what I suggested (with a side note to wait for the new Radeon card), now I have to wait for the new Radeon card, and a new GeForce GTX. If your friend can wait a bit, both new Radeon and nVidia G92 based GTS should be out within next month or two at which point he can evaluate if ATI card is worth buying or if G92 GTS performance is worth extra $ compared to GT.

Alright, someone give a shout out when they find this card to purchase.
Tiger Direct seems to be their unfortunate channel of choice. Hopefully others will pick it up.

im awaiting the 3870 512 version.... hopefully one company will have gddr4 otherwise ill have to get the 1 gig version.
reports that 3 vs 4 difference is like 12-15 watts which is enormous considering the low threshold this card might hit
I have a feeling though that the 8800gt 512 will be the better buy cash wise

Here's the 3850 Ultimate in case you haven't seen it.
