Matrox G400 MAX - Removing the fan
What is the best way to go if I want to remove the fan on my Matrox G400 MAX card?
Ah, so it's possible to use a Northbridge cooler. Does the Northbridge have the same footprint as the VGA chip? Or is it just close enough. The ZM-NB32J seems pretty flexible so it's probably possible to adjust it for different chip sizes or rather different distances between the drilling holes. I guess it would be possible to use the ZM-NB47J as well. What is a Zalman ZM17?
The fan on my MAX 400 started clicking a cpl weeks ago. So I got the lower end Zalman ZM50-HP (like < $20usd now) for it. Works fine, though its alittle toasty if you do not have some other type of fan point at it. I run it completely passive and rely on the case fans.
If you use the passive cooler like that northbridge one, you WILL likely need fan cooling of some sort... based on my experience with this heatpipe. If you look at MikeC's thread of his setup, there is a panaflo fan "mounted" near it.
So a heatpipe, in my opinion, is not overkill. Atleast the using the lower end/cost version.
