They make noise, too.

ATI cards - XT vs PRO

Post by PretzelB » Thu Mar 04, 2004 4:39 am

If the performance increases from regular, to PRO, to XT in the ATI line of cards I think it's safe to assume (and I've read as much in these forums) that the heat increases too. So when you get to the XT you are talking a card that is maxed out and probably very hot.

But how about something like a 9600xt and a 9800pro? Since the 9800pro is not the "maxed out" version it might run cooler. I'm wondering if the experience I had with cpus is the same as video cards. I bought an AMD tbird 1.4 which was the highest for the tbird chip. After trying lots of things to cool it I realized it probably would have been better off going with a 1.2 chip and taking the small hit in power.

I know there are heat or power ratings somewhere but I didn't find them at the ATI site. I'm just wondering if from a cooling standpoint (and consequently a silence standpoint) if going with the 9800pro (or regular 9800) instead of the 9600xt might be something easier to control.

9600 XT's run at core temps of 30 idle and 41 full load
I'm pretty sure that a 9800Pro will be hotter than that

for reference 9800XT's run at 67 ilde, 74 full load

nice link wumpus

my temps were from an anandtech article

can say how comparable the two articles are but the xbitlabs article measures the 9800Pro as 47 idle, 63 full load which suggests that the 9800Pro is hotter than the 9600XT

Interesting. I guess you can't use the cpu example I had for comparison.

I should probably bookmark that website - seems like they're quoted a lot.

Thanks.
