Quiet an 9600PRO Fan

They make noise, too.

Quiet an 9600PRO Fan

Post by PhilC » Sat Apr 10, 2004 11:16 am

I would like to quiet down my very loud ATI 9600PRO stock fan and have decided to go with the AC VGA Silencer Rev.3 when it becomes available in my area. In the mean time could I safely reduce the fan speed with a Zalman Fan Mate 1? I don't know if would drop the noise level enough, but I'm sure it would help.

That said, how do you install the Fan Mate which is three pin and the stock fan header on the board/fan is 2 pin? Some have said I don't even need active cooling on this card, but I'm alittle afraid to go that route. Air flow and cooling are pretty good(optional front fan in Sonata) with idle temps: CPU 30c Case 28c.

Any advice and help with Fan Mate pin problem is appreciated.

Thanks,
PhilC

Given that you can buy passive 9600 pros then I'd say it's fairly safe just to unplug the fan. You say you have decent case airflow anyway which should do the job.

The fanmate could be used, but you'd be cutting and soldering wires and maybe installing a new connector.

Thanks geordie and 1911user, I think I'll just wait for the Silencer Rev.3 to become available in my area.

Just connect the fan connector to those pins of the Fan Mate that correspond to the red and black wires of the Fan Mate.

geordie brings up an interesting question... it amy have been talked about in other threads.....but do people think it is safe to just unplug the fan and rely on the stock HS on a 9600 series card???

assuming very good case airflow

Definitely, the 9600 series runs EXTREMELY cool. There is no question that the "vanilla" 9600 and the pro can be passively cooled with minimal effort and a crappy generic heatsink. With the XT, you might need a reasonably decent passive heatsink, something like the Zalman CR-17, and a moderate amount of airflow in the case.. but that's it.

Those case temps seem real good too, does sound like your airflow is good.

So do you Guys/Gals suggest if someone, me, should buy the 9600XT we could disconnect the stock fan and cool it with an 80L at 5 or 12volts?

yeah, or you could get the sapphire ultimate 9600xt with the pre-installed mini-zalman passive, the ZM50 ..

The 9600 runs so extraordinarily cool, I seriously doubt anyone could get into trouble even with the highest clocked XT model. All it takes is a tiny bit of heatsink and airflow.

Maybe if you removed all the heatsinks and ran the chip bare.. :D

Given the relative low cost of the ACVS, what's the general opinion on running this without the fan on a 9600Pro?

Seems like a half-decent heat sink in itself...

A VGA silencer sans fan would probably work fine, but you'll want to remove the plastic shroud around the heatsink if you're not planning to run the fan-- otherwise I don't see how the air can flow through it.

Hi, I have a 9600pro with a (modified) ACVS on it. Before I got the Silencer I experimented with running the existing fan at 7V & 5V. 7V was still noisey; 5V was reasonable and cooled OK. Now I've got the Silencer on it and I've left it running in 2D mode with the fan turned off and it doesn't seam to come to any harm. I haven't tried 3D work with fan off, although I mostly run it on "low" with only 5V feed to it which results in a very low fan speed that can't move much air so passive may be OK.
Just my thoughts / experience.
Seb
