Hercules 9800 & VGA Silencer?

Post by DG » Thu May 20, 2004 12:42 pm

I have a friend who has this card, and he doesn't know if the VGA Silencer will fit. At the back of the PCB, is a large copper heatsink that he cannot remove, but the holes are there (look at these pictures: http://www.vr-zone.com/reviews/Hercules ... /page2.htm). So, any sugestions?

Won't that heatsink just come off when he takes the front one off?

It's probably just held on there by a TIM pad, there's no reason why they would epoxy it. (the through bolts are the obvious real form of attachment)

Unless that comes off there's no way the Silencer is going to work properly.

No, he took off the front and the back remains there. It's REALLY stuck there. This is a problem that only this video card (Hercules 9800) has, if i remeber corectly.
I was thinking at some kind of mod: the front side of the VGA Silencer to be held in place by 2 screws, but instead the standard back of the Silencer, it will be the back copper heatsink (wich has the screw holes in the right place)

Has anyone done this before?
