Are nVidia/ATi Thinking when developing their heatsinks/HSFs
Ok, this may just be a random blurb or outburst of rage, but honestly, what are they thinking when desigining their cooling systems?! My main complaint is how almost ALL stock heatsinks/hsfs expel the hot air in a radial fashion BACK INTO THE CASE. The 6800s are a prime example, as all the air gets shot right back to the front fan intake of most cases, which then gets dragged into the CPU, and then finally spit back out.
What are these people thinking? Why not, oh, i dont know, somehow incorporate a type of cyclone blower that blows air out of the PCI card next to the AGP slot? Or something similar, in which the hot air generated by the GFX card is sent out RIGHT THEN AND THERE, out from the case, without heating up the case (as much as today's ones do, god forbid *stares at his blazing 9800 XT). I do acknowledge the VGA Silencer card everyone speaks of, but it is not "approved" for the new cards, i.e., X800/6800.
Do these people think we have nothing in our cases? That they are freely open to air and that blowing the hot exhaust air has no effect? I mean come on ! WHAT IS UP WITH THAT?!
And think about this - If I had one of the Lian Li cases, with the mobos flipped, my video card would be RECYCLING its own hot air! Air would get pushed out, only to get sucked in again by the fans.
Argh... and yet I'm still preordering the X800XT.... *smirk*

Here's what Ati/Nvidia are thinking when designing a new HSF:
1. 99% of people don't care how much noise it makes.
2. A little heatsink and a fan is much cheaper to make and ship than a big heatsink.
3. Having a cooling solution that occupies another slot will cost sales, especially in the OEM market.
4. 99% of aftermarket shoppers rank graphics cards by: performance, brand, value/price, and appearance. Then maybe noise.
Now there is a market for quiet VGA's: just look at what the noise issue did for the GeforceFX, and what success Sapphire has had with their Ultimates line. But Ati/Nvidia will always go for the big center of the market, that's where the sales are.

We must convert everyone into silent PC computing!!! So that they will make silent VGA cards! Either that or I should just camp out in front of Sapphire waiting for their X800XT Ultimate... *DroolRusty075 wrote:Now there is a market for quiet VGA's: just look at what the noise issue did for the GeforceFX, and what success Sapphire has had with their Ultimates line. EDIT: Sapphire replied, saying that it will be sometime in July or August when the X800XT Ultimate will be available. Since someone earlier posted that the X800s don't run so hot, maybe the huge gigantic heatsinks we saw on the 9800 XT Ultimates will shrink a bit? (like, say... oh... i don't know... 50%? lol...)

Just use the size BBC code to just make the text smaller.

Wohoo look at that! It's smaller! lol...
Anyways back to the topic... yah... hopefully in July/August when Sapphire has the X800XT Ultimate, the heatsink will be smaller, because frankly the 9800XT Ultimate scares me. I dont wanna hear horror stories of that thing ripping off AGP sockets, lol.
I would put my SN45G's stats in my sig, but I dont really use it - I made it for my parents and they have yet to return back from their business trips to enjoy it, so once it's in their hands it out of my mind ^.^ BUT! While we're at it... Athlon 2800 w/M1A, eVGA GF FX 5200 fanless 256MB, 160MB Seagate (soon to be a Samsung SpinPoint 160GB ), Plextor L708A,1 GB PC2700 Mushkin 2x512 High performance lvl 2 DDR RAM. It's sort of a HTPC, so we can watch our movies on our TV as well as for my parents to use for word processing/internet.
