MSI GFFX 5900U cooling question

Post by Twin_Snakes » Tue Aug 10, 2004 12:39 am

Hi guys! I'll be getting an MSI GFFX 5900U 256MB soon.

From what I've seen on the pics, there's two VPU fans: a large one on the
front and smaller one on the back. I'm pretty sure its going to be noisy.

The problem I'm affraid I'll be facing is I doubt the the card will fit because
of the smaller back fan. There's barely 1/2'' ( if not less) of space beetween
the AGP slot and the the CPU heatsink.

If I remove the back fan, how bad will it affect the VPU cooling?

Also, eventualy I'd like to get a very quiet if not passive cooling solution
for this card. Is there any cooler I should look into?

The Zalman ZM80D type coolers are not an option.

Thanks ahead of time!

If the CPU heatsink's that close, I'd be a worried about that fan on the back blowing hot air from the CPU at it. It shouldn't be more than 1cm tall though. It's one of these: http://www.msi.com.tw/program/products/ ... hp?UID=477 , right?

There should be a VGA silencer that'll fit FX5900's soon.

Do you need your PCI slots?

Yes this is the card. I don't know if there's a difference but the one I
ordered is the nBOX package.

My thoughs exactly about the back fan pulling hot air straight from the
CPU heatsink.

I don't need all my PCI slots. I also just had a look at some of the other
threads here and saw those FX compatible VGA Silencers. It's about
time they made those.

There's also a thread about a passive cooler for GFFX 6800 video cards
called Aero VM101. Are they any good?

From the pics they look like they will fit just fine.
