Zalman VF700 Confusion.
Hi,
I've been a long time lurker and have decided to join this forum as i have not seen anyone posting a question similar to mine.
I have the Galaxy Geforce 6600 256mb PCI-E card (it follows nvidia reference design) and have the Shuttle SB81P. The Geforce 6600GT does not work in it.
The Geforce 6600 256mb PCI-E i have has a leaf-blower sound-like fan on it and sometimes click.
It is annoying... I then noticed that only the Zalman VF700 could fit in the case without modding.
However as it states on the zalman site it is not compaitble with "nVidia PCX" cards...
1.)Does the PCX stands for PCI-E?
Or Does it mean the Geforce PCX series cards?
2.)How much better is the Cu as oppose to the AlCu version
Thanks.

I didn't get my welcome, but I can welcome someone else... cool!
LBadvance, Welcome to SPCR!
AFAIK the PCX stands for 'bridged to PCI-E cards'. The HSI bridge probably gets in the way of the VF-700.
I'm not sure if it applies to the 6600 AGP too, it may be a problem just for the previous generation.
But since you get the 6600 PCI-E, the VF-700 should work fine.
The Cu version is about 2 degrees cooler at the same fan speed (but heavier).

Oh ok now it all makes sense!
The geforce 6600 256mb is PCI-E native.
hmm only 2 degrees cooler. Not worth it, the extra price and the extra weight!
The Copper version is 270g where as the AlCu one is only 180g. I think its a no brainer since im using a shuttle im planning it to move it around often.
So AlCu for me it is.
Has anyone tried running HL2 with the fan @ 5V (silent mode)? Thats what im planning to do and was wondering if there was enough airflow @ 5V.
Or is it smarter to buy the fanmate and then adjust accordingly?
Thanks.

Getting 7V to the VF700 requires a little rewiring of the included molex adapter (there's no fan mate included), though, so I don't know if it's worth the trouble, since even at 5V, the Zalman heatsink is probably cooler than the stock one.
Edit : I checked a review posted in HardForums and on the 6600GT there doesn't seem to be any temperature difference between the 12V and 5V settings. NeoSeeker also confirms that the Zalman inproves temperatures over the stock cooler. I have doubts over their noise measurements, though
