Shutting the MSI 6600GT up!

Post by j-azn » Fri Jan 21, 2005 8:24 am

I just bought my MSi 6600GT (AGP) vga and unfortunately for me, it everything reviews say but quiet. I have thought about using my existing vantec stealth (not quiet) and blow air at it vertically. The thing is, i dont think there will be any airflows.

The other alternatives i was thinking of was getting a vga silencer/cooler that are fanless. I am in Toronto, not downtown, but more uptown (Markham) so those Artic Coolers are unreachable in here ><. What other vga cooler/silencer are there available in toronto area perferably markham? Also, my wallets is whinning lately after buying the 6600gt so anything under $50 CAD and performs well is most wanted :p

I am open for suggestions so feed me with it

J-azn... check your card name very carefullly - if you have a NX6600 TD256 or TD128, the Zalman ZM-80D-HP will work with it. The NX6600 VTD256, VTD128, VT2D256 and VT2D128 will also work (as well as all of the "E" subversions of these cards.

The NX6600 VT2D256, VT2D128, VTD256 and VTD128 versions will not.

I find no listing of a MSI NX6600GT AGP card - are you sure you have a 6600GT?

Basically, if your GPU and memory is mounted on a 45 degree angle to the card, it will probably not work with the ZM-80D-HP.

The ZM-80D-HP works very well with the MSI NX6600GT-TD128. I have tried it personally and get very good results. Completely silent operation, as it is a fanless, heatpipe system.

The Zalman ZM-80D-HP is available from QuietPC for $41 CDN before shipping and handling, and mine arrived within 2 business days of ordering from Toronto.

it is the NX6600GT-VTD128. It is the one with the fancy heatsink cover.

I am thinking of getting the AeroCool VM-101 but i dont know about its performance.

Compared to the Zalman 80D, is the AeroCool VM-101 better??
Also, would it perform good in my unmodded Sonata (with low air flow)??

Here is my field report on the ZM-80D-HP:

...and here is Edward Ng's (SPCR reviewer) of the VM-101

I don't know how either would perform in a low airflow case. My case (Fong Kai FK-333) has very good airflow. Perhaps Edward or some other passive cooling + low airflow expert can speak to that.

Ed makes it pretty clear in his review that the VM-101 is more than adequate for the card. His case has just a couple slow-spinning fans (I would consider that "optimized low-airflow," and I want a writeup Ed! :P), and since you have a 120mm on the back panel of your Sonata, you basically have the same cooling setup as him.

Comparing the ZM-80D and VM-101 is trickier, but you've already seen that they both work, so it doesn't matter which one you use. The ZM-80D might not fit in your case (Ian Brumby talked about this problem), so if you want a recommendation, I'll just say VM-101. But you've got all the information you need just sitting right in front of you, so go do it already!! :D (personally I like my mod the best because it's the cheapest and most ghetto, but most people wouldn't consider those to be flattering qualities ;)).
