Is there any way of doing this do you know? i use Rivatuner so if that can do it that would be cool. What i want is for it to do it automaticly.

I know the 68xx series has 2D mode, 3D mode and Performance 3D mode.

You can set the fan at different %s for those modes, and the fan will ramp up or down depending on what application you are using.

Atitool can load different profiles when it detects a 3D app, so it's possible to have different fan and voltage (atleast with X1800 series) settings for 2D and 3D. Haven't experimented with this yet, so I don't know how well it works.

ATI Tools has a 7 level ramp to adjust VGA fan speeds on supported cards (eg X800XL). A 3D app heat increase will trigger it, so you can set it to 100% fan on load and ramp it down to ~40% (quiet) at idle.

It's like SpeedFan for the CPU, except ATI Tools isn't 'on/off' and doesn't have to run in the background. Once it's set, it stays until you reconfigure it. Pretty neat idea. Having one for the case fans would be ideal since I keep forgetting to turn up the rheostat when I game.

So the X1800 has undervolting options as well as underclocking options? I would've appreciated this with my X700, as I probably could've run it passive in 2D mode. The underclocking helped a little, but would have been a lot better with undervolting.

If the X1800 is anything like the X800 line then it runs quite cool when idle (2D mode).

My AC VGA Silencer 5 rev 3 runs at 16% when the GPU is under 40C. Idles at 36C. I have set it so that every 5C above 40C it spins the fan faster. The fastest I have set it to run is 56% and thats over 55C. Its hit a high of 58C.
