Gigabyte passive HD4850

They make noise, too.

Just to join the fray, I picked one of these up from NewEgg recently and have been having many of the problems mentioned in this thread. I can definitely hear the chirp/whine at high framerates, as well as when games load (perhaps correlated with loading lots of textures). The first time I ran 3DMark 06 on this, the whole system spontaneously restarted.

Here are some stats:
Cooler Master RC 1000 Cosmos Case
Basic config: very quiet. Just 3 fans: one at the top (140mm Kaze Maru 500 rpm), one Kama Flow PWM on the HR-01 Plus (ducted out the back), and one more 120mm fan @ 700rpm to help with the hard drives.
Idle: high 90c.
Load: up to 130c.

But then, after adding a fair amount of extra cooling, I still get unreasonably high temps:
added a second Kaze Maru 1200rpm, removed top grill
moved 120mm hd fan to bottom of case, tried both pointing up and down (for negative pressure) and increased to about 1100rpm
closed case
idle: 67c
load: high 90c
load on Furmark: 120c and kept on climbing...

Closing the case has no appreciable difference. If anything, temps go up a bit.

Moving one of the 120mm fans so that it is very close to the config in mkk's post, I get:
53c idle
75c load (memory went as high as 84.5c load, according to GPU-Z)
load on Furmark: seems to be holding steady at about 84c, and 92c for memory.

These numbers are safely away from the thermal cutoff that I am comfortable with them, but the case is considerably louder, which defeats the whole purpose.

Is this is just a bad card? The high pitched whine is pretty annoying, and it seems that it even happens when scrolling through webpages. Should I RMA it for another one, or return and replace with a PowerColor 4850 PCS+?

I just received this card, and put it in my NSK 2480. It fit by a very small margin, similar to the previous card I had in there (also a Silent Pipe model from Gigabyte). I'll put a few new pics of the rig in the gallery thread.

Idle temperatures with fans @ 650rpm (virtually inaudible) hover around 45C. I did some stability testing with Furmark. Load temperatures topped out just below 80C with fans @ 1000 rpm (which is the highest speed they normally go in games). When I turned the fans back down to 650rpm, the temperatures climbed up to 100C, at which point I stopped the test (still, no artifacts). This was with an ambient temperature of about 20C.

There is slight coil whine when displaying 3D graphics at close to 60fps. Fortunately, this is easily drowned by game noise. There seems to be less, and then no coil whine as frequencies go away from 60fps. (I have VSync set to be always on in the ATI drivers.)

Just a question, Is it possible to have 2 of these in a crossfire configuration with only one PCI slot of spacing? That is, in a P182 case with the middle bay fan installed?

It should be ok. The card takes up exactly two slots.

Thanks.

Sorry for being unclear, However, But I was referring to the airflow restrictions and the possible temperature problem.

You need good negative pressure with this setup, otherwise things might get too hot. You will probably need to block some front intakes, and have both top fans active.

I like the new Silent Cell cooler a lot more. I think it takes advantage of normal negative case temperature a bit more. The 9600 GT version is very similar to the the silent version that Asus is selling.

I'm somewhat disappointed with the fact that there's no 9800 Silent versions. or any other 4850 equivalent.

I'll try to provide some more information:

3-24 update:

I have two chassis fans - front and rear - so airflow in my case is rather good.
this is the only one so far that bought. and it is running very cool.

thread done? eh?

I am picking this card up this week. thanks Emesen

Here's a great review from HardOCP which takes a look at various cards both individually and in multi-card setups from ATI and nVidia. Page 3 seems to be the one you'd be interested in, although they tested at higher resolution than you're using. They found the 4850 provided the best experience at 1680x1050 and basically all settings on "medium". With a pair of 4850's they were able to do 1920x1200 with almost all settings at high, but that's with drawing more than twice as many pixels as the resolution you mention. Still, I get the feeling if you want to run all settings on high in Crysis you should be thinking about a GTX260 instead.
I just wanted to thank you for your comment.
Hey TXFI, will you show us some pictures or something? :D
hardocp ALWAYS drastically underrates cares for "playability" 4850 can do almost any game on full detail at 1920x1200 and look smooth.

hardocp looks so technical and interesting, really, they are a bad indicator.

So is the consensus that the Gigabyte passive 4850 works fairly well in a decently ventilated case?

Newegg's prices for this card have dropped quite a bit recently and I'm really tempted to pick one up...

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6814125258

...but they also have the HIS version with the rear-exhaust fan for a similar price...

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6814161244

The Gigabyte has 1Gb of memory vs. the HIS 512Mb but I'm not convinced that will make a difference on my 1650x1050 monitor anyway. I haven't seen too many comments on the HIS 4850 in this forum, anyone have an opinion between the two?

My case is a Solo with rear 120 and (2) 90 mm front fans, so I think I would probably be OK with the Gigabyte, but I'm still leery of its heat output...

I'm thinking of getting this video card but was wondering if my 300W (350W peak) Okaya fanless PSU can support it.

viewtopic.php?p=99350&sid=5b056af629102 ... 3f9cc146ec

I'm running:
AMD 4850E passive cooling with HDT-1284
Gigabyte 780G
Seagate 2.5" HD
2 GB RAM
Scythe 1000 rpm 120mm case fan
Antec NSK3480
Windows XP

If not, please recommend another passive card.

Since I'm using Win XP only, I guess I won't experiencing all the eye candy that DX10 can offer. So a less powerful card can also do the trick.

Thanks

Check out MikeC's review on this site: article851-page6.html

He had idle usage at +50 and load at +100 watts. With your 45W CPU, I would assume you would be fine.

It sounds like this card definitely needs active cooling though, so you might need to add a front fan (or two). I just troll forums a lot and don't have much direct experience, so don't take my advice :)

Tom's Hardware June 2009 "Best Graphics Card Buys" names the (2) 4850 cards in crossfire as the current price performance sweet spot. But I dunno how that's going to work in a Silverstone TJ-08 with this passive solution. I might start with one and see how it goes :)

I bought the Gigabyte ATI GV-R485MC-1GI a week ago and quite frankly, I'm very dissapointed :(

The temperatures are fine, it does a surprisingly good job of keeping them down.

The problem is ATI's continued piss poor support of OpenGL and the fact that flash video streaming tears a lot.

This makes it very annoying to watch stuff on bbc iplayer, youtube etc as there's always some tearing near the top of the image when the camera tracks sideways. Some people may not notice or be bothered by it but it bothers the hell out of me, when my much older Nvidia 7600 card played back such videos super smooth.

Normal hardware accelerated file movies do play back fine though.

The second thing is, if you happen to play Second Life forget it. This card just seems to crash every time, even if I disable VBO.

That's a deal breaker for me, wish I'd gone with the 9800GT instead now, even if it can't match the raw power of this one.

I just installed this card on a Silverstone Nightjar 300W Powersupply.

The rest of my specifications are:
1x SLK3700B + AcoustiPack
1x AsRock 4Core1333-FullHD
1x DualCore Intel Core 2 Duo E4400
2x 2GB OPC Reaper HPC DDR2 memory
2x 250GB Seagate Barracuda SATA HDDs
1x Samsung 1TB Sata HDD
1x LG DVD
2x Cooltek 140mm fans
2x Nexus 120mm fans
1x Schyte 90mm fan
Windows 7

I havent tried much yet, because I just recently installed the GPU.
I did try running Folding@home and Seti@home on the CPU while looping 3DMark06 a couple of times, just to see if how my PSU and the rest of the computer could handle it. Temps and so on... No problems so far! :)
About 80 degree on graphic card and 45-50 on CPU. One of the 140mm fans blow at the GPU at a slow speed.

It was fanless at first when I heard a weird squeling noise.. When I was tried to locate the source of the noise, the temprature on the GPU raised without I noticed it. It climbed to 110 degree celcius and the computer beeped and selfterminated as a precaution...
So.. Dont run it without some kind of air circulation or something!

This was the source of the noise:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mQa79pWC0OQ
An annoying sound from the PSU when VSync is disabled in some 3D applications... I found a workaround with ATI Tray Tool.

For now it looks like its working out fine running this card on a 300W PSU. :)
About video tearing, perhaps you need to tick the "Tripple Buffering" on OpenGL in Catalyst Control Center or something?

This card works great on my build. With the case intake fan blowing on it, temps are fine (actually, CPU temps are my problem). Even plays Crysis with high settings at lower resolution -- I only have a 19" CRT at the moment.

ATI's Linux drivers are my only complaint. They totally suck. I can't get 85hz on my monitor because the stupid driver doesn't recognize it. The stock Ubuntu video driver has no problem doing 85hz. Sigh.

Haven't noticed the flash problem, but haven't watched more than a few videos.
