Keep in mind I have pretty good hearing, none of my other 3 family members can hear these whine, only me.. same with TV whine.. I'm the only one in the family that can hear it..

I-Inc TW191D - Had 2. 1 whine on turn on, no whine after 10mins, the other no whine at all ever.
LG w2242TQ - Low whine when brightness lower than 18 audible from arm length (about 2 feet)
HannsG 191D - 3.5 years, no whine, better quality matte compared to the I-Inc TW191D. Strange, especially when they're the same company.
I-Inc iF-281DPB - 2 weeks old, no whine yet=) ; but quality still bad.
Asus MS238H - LED. Had it for 3 days. no whine yet.
Samsung P2380 - Got this today, no whine so far.

Iiyama E2201W 22" TN - Very slight hum, not audible at 2'
HP L2335 23" S-IPS - Slight hum, not audible at 2' with present background noise levels, variable with monitor brightness.

Just hookup up my 2 new Samsung 2443BW monitors last night: both of them hum unfortunatelly :?
First tryout settings:
Brightness: 66
Contrast: 60

edit:
Changing contrast has no impact om the humming. It's only due to the brightness. There's no humming between 100 - 97. 96 is still OK, and as from 95 - 0 the humming is always there on a constant level.

For the moment I've amped it back up to 97 and will have a look if I can reduce the brightness via software settings of my videocard. We'll see...

I recently purchased a Samsung T260HD, and have noticed a faint humming/buzzing/whine whenever the brightness is set to 91 or less. 92 or higher and its silent.

Its weird why it makes a noise at a certain brightness level. I've never had this with any of my previous LCD monitors.

Setting the brightness using my ATI Catalyst, helps lower the brightness, but the screen looks different than it does when I just use the brightness control of the monitor.

After reading this thread, it sounds like a lot of monitors do this now. Are they using cheaper parts or something? I'm not sure if I'll keep it or not. I would really hate it if it gets worse.

Asus 24" VW246H 1080P

I can only hear the buzzing if I put my ears right next to the back of the bezel. Otherwise nope, it's drowned out by the ambient noise.

SyncMaster 215TW

Dual Screen setup, so two of them whining in front of me.
Its a high pitch low volume hum, half the office can not hear it (too high for them).
Only audible when I open a maximized console with white on black letters.
When its completely white or black, nothing is heard.
I tried playing with the brightness and contrast with nearly no luck (it gets a little less noisy, but only with visually inacceptable settings).
Started to occur days ago, wasn't there before.

The most horrible thing: When I leave it, I get used to it, don't hear it anymore and after some time I get headache.
And I mustn't have two consoles maximized at the same time -> Stereo whining!

Try adjusting the gamma/RGB as well within ATI tools. Yes it does look different but you can get close. Or use ATI for brightness then change gamma/RGB on the monitor. Use a good desktop bacgkround as a test pattern so you can fine tune it so its not too dark and not to bright.

Samsung p2350, whines at all brightness levels except for %100.

very annoying as the pitch is not that high.

Hi, just my 2 euro cents:

Benq G900WA (old model): completely silent.
Asus WK191D: it hums. The humming can be reduced by the brightness and contrast tips you provided, but it does not disappear.

I came here because when I installed the Asus monitor I noticed the humming and I thought "oh no, now monitors hum?!"

Thanks for this thread and for SilentPC...

UPDATE: Life Informàtica from Barcelona doesn't want to change the Asus monitor! Blame on them! Grrrrr

Recently started noticing an intermittent buzzing from my Dell S2309W. Brightness >=75 seems to stop it, but I can't stand keeping it that high. The buzzing also seems to be getting worse. I've had this monitor for probably close to a year and wasn't having these problems until a month or two ago.

Need to figure out how to open it up sometime and put some hot glue on all the coils, hopefully that will put a stop to this. It's driving me nuts.

I have this display wall mounted and connected to my HTPC.
It's a great screen and the backlight is silent, but as it warms up it creaks!
Really annoying when you're watching a movie!

Hum on my HP zr24w

I just received a new HP zr24w Professional Monitor. It too hums or buzzes unless the brightness is > about 90 %. I am disappointed because otherwise it is great. I am trying to decide what to do since it appears from this thread that others, with all sort of monitors, have the same problem, so one could be on quite a quest to find a quiet monitor. I got this after my EIZO CRT died, but their LCDs are expensive. So do I keep it the just try and get use to it, cause that is the way most LCDs are, or get it replaced and experience the same or some other problem???

LG W2220P

I've bought a LG Flatron W2220P two weeks ago. One of the very few cheap non-TN monitors.

At 100% luminosity, it's silent. But the brightness is unbearable -- and setting the software brightness at -90% just ain't nice. Also, at 100%, the brightness is uneven, visibly darker on the right side.

At 0% luminosity, it hums audibly. I'd say the main frequency is at 150 Hz (3 times 50 Hz -- I live in Europe). I can hear it at arm's length, despite having the window open and lots of birds singing outside.

It seems that at medium luminosity (20-98%) it's louder than at 0%.

It's not that bad (I mean, if I worked in a garage, with people checking truck engines around me, I probably wouldn't hear it), but still, it is the loudest part of my computer. I guess buying a SSD now would be a waste.

AW2310 - Running since mid January 2010

1920x1080 120hz

No buzz/humm @ 100-80 Brightness then with ear within 3-4" of screen (front or back) you can here some medium-low frequency hummmmm.

Sounds constant all the way down to 0 brightness.

Contrast had no effect on sound.

Refresh rate dit not seem to affect the sound at all.

My opinion: I've owned two screens where I could hear buzzing from normal sitting distance and it was annoying. This screen I've owned since January and to be honest I had not even checked for buzzing until now. So I had not noticed any buzzing at all. But if you do seal your ear to the screen then there is some minimal buzzing.

Im getting disturbing whine from my lcd with web pages with a lot of text or certain patterns like an excel table. Im on Samsung 2443bw. Doesn't seem to be brightness or any other setting related. Does anyone else notice this ?

one page that causes this: xxx.widescreengamingforum.xxx/wiki/Essential_Games_List (cant post links)

also a wikipedia article(with a lot of text) causes the same whine.

My Dell 2008WFP exhibits a slight buzz (not high-pitched as far as I can tell) at the back, on the left side. To my ears, this is completely blocked by the panel in a normal viewing position (front, about 70 cm away). I have it at 20% brightness, but changing the setting doesn't appear to make a difference.

samsung syncmaster bx2450.

slightly audible buzzing can be heard if i stick my head at the back of the monitor; however, it is completely inaudible from the front. no difference in audible buzzing/whining throughout the entire range of backlight settings.

caveat: i had to exchange this monitor twice for the same model because the other ones COULD be heard from the front at certain backlight settings. its a great monitor if youre lucky enough to get one from the 'good' batch.

also tested out two viewsonic VX2450WM monitors before i got the samsung. both of them had an annoying buzz. nice picture quality, but stay away if you want silence.

HP ZR24w: Depending on unit, noise ranges from audible and annoying to very distracting rattle which prevents use.

I'm on my third unit now. The first one was otherwise somewhat OK (a little whining noise, but tolerable), but sometimes it made this annoying rattle which was audible even with music turned on. Totally unacceptable. Had to return it. Second unit wasn't that bad when it comes to sound, but it had a bright pixel in the middle of the screen so I returned it. This third unit is again making some loud whining noise by default and even had that same rattle for a second or two, I'm just hoping it doesn't return. Also, some bad pixels here too.

Noise gets practically away if brightness is set to 100 % (below 96 % it begins to annoy), but the display is only useable at 0 % brightness, otherwise your eyes melt.

I'll report on my "old" Samsung 2043MW. The first unit I used for two years had a noticeable high-pitched whine while in standby and a lower-pitched one while on with brightness set at less than 50%. It broke last month, the unit I got as a replacement has no such issue, so I guess I had bad luck with a dud.

Have a Samsung T220 which emitted a whine(don't remember if it was high or low frequency, been a while). Whenever the hardware was set to less than 100% brightness it would appear. After trying hardware route, using ATI graphics software to turn brightness down has made the whine disappear.
Just set the monitor to max brightness at the hardware and turned it down in leves using the software.

NEC LCD2690wuxi - has a high pitched whine which is modulated a little by different brightness settings but never eliminated. The noise problem was said to be confined to early european models of the monitor. I don't know about recent 2690 models. I got fed up with the noise, and wide colour gamut colour management hell, and bought the smaller, newer NEC LCD2490wuxi2 which is silent (and sRGB by default).

LG Flatron L1719S - Very acceptable, noticeable but not annoying
Samsung SyncMaster 226BW - Very loud, above 90% brightness high pitch, below a bit lower but still loud.

I'm curious to know if all LED monitors will are quiet. Anyone have a noisy LED monitor?
