I generally have a setting between 30 and 35% brightness through monitor controls. No whine whatsoever with the possible exception of brightness about 70%. This however so much bordering on non-presence I sometimes doubt whether is really there (and I have REALLY sensitive ears).
Its not a problem anyway as it dissappears again at lower settings and 70% is still retina searing as far as i'm concerned.

A slight "rushing" sound is noticable when you really put your ear against the top of the monitor, but this is inaudible at normal working distance from screen. It is most probably caused by warmed up air leaving the monitor enclosure throught the ventilation slits.

Dell 2407WFP - HC

Reasonably tolerable buzz at 40 brightness (maximum noise). Not a noise you'll hear during the daytime however with a quiet machine at night you'll definitely notice it. Tapers off in both directions. Only really inaudible at 80 - 100 brightness

Samsung 2232BW, gets stronger at lower brightness. It starts at 80% brightness.

Viewsonic VX2025VM. An excellent budget panel, it's not TN, but i don't remember what it was. No whine with any brightness setting. I think it's because it doesn't adjuste the backlight at all, it only adjusts the liquid cristal to let less light go through. Downside would be a higher power consumption. Actually, i haven't tried checking power consumption under full brightness and min brightness, probably should before making a claim.
Problem i have with it: no vertical size and position adjustment under analog. And a lot of trouble with aspect ratio scaling. It upscales stretch anything that is below something like 1600x900.
It's discontinued so not much to talk about, but for the 300$ i paid, was well worth it.

Lenovo L220x - dead quiet when on or off. When in energy saving mode, it whines quite a bit after a few hours. High-pitched.

Viewsonic vx2255wmb - high-pitched whine when in use. Least noisy at >91% brightness and around 30% or so. Some whine when in energy-saving mode (which is the mode it's in when it's "turned off" as well -- there is no real power on/off button). Not recommended if you have a quiet computer.

Totally silent, as far as I can tell. No other problems either.

Acer AL2423W 24" S-IPS monitor. Whines when brightness is set below 80%, audible within +/- 1m (3ft).

Samsung 2493HM 24" TN monitor - couldn't discover any whine yet, except from the built-in speakers which become quiet when you turn the volume on the monitor to 0.

Samsung SyncMaster 940B Sharp high-pitched noise, audible from a couple of meters at night, when below 40% brightness. Drops between 40-60%, and no audible noise above 60%.

Its been bugging me for some time now, and Im very glad I found this topic , been using it with 40% brightness , but I don't remember it being like this when I got it, if feels like its been getting worse. Im not 100% sure though it might just be me who's become more aware of it.

Samsung 931BW - loud whine under 80% brightness
Dell D1626HT (UltraScan 1600HS Series) CRT - ever so slight buzz, completely tolerable

Samsung T240 - A buzzing sound begins at ~85%, and then the sound comes and goes, for example 61% can be louder than 60% and sometimes 60% can be louder than 61%. So it does not become louder the lower you go.

Sometimes the sound can be heard all across my room. Buzzing and annoying.

Samsung 940BW - Completely silent at 100% brightness. At lower intensity it emmits a very light buzzing which is inaudible unless I press my ear against the back of the monitor.


Off-topic: I'd love for feedback of owners of the HP LP2475W.

My Benq FP2091 emits a high-pitched tone when the brightness is set > 25. Sound volume does not increase linearly with brightness. It also seems to be worse right after the monitor starts up.

I think the noise started in the past month or two. The monitor is at least a couple of years old. My environment is very quiet, the (quiet) fan on my Zalman Reserator XT is normally the loudest sound I can hear.

Dell 2408WFP - 24" Dell LCD... No noticeable whine ... haven't tested extensively, but I've been using it for a while, and I'm very anal so I would have noticed.

Whines badly between 16 and 66 brightness.
Under 16 is almost inaudible if the monitor is warm (it takes 10 minutes to warmup) , then I can hear it only at night and very slightly. If it is cold it whines (although not so much as between 16 and 66)..
Over 66 I can not hear it at 1m even at night. I have to put my ear next to the monitor to hear something from the monitor.

Interesting. I usually have my brightness around 11 so I would not have noticed. I will test tonight and post results. For once I may have lucked out on sample variance...

EDIT: My monitor does in fact make noise right around the brightness levels you suggested. It sounds more like a constant hum to me. Otherwise, its effectively inaudible at the brightness that I use...

Philips 190S - An annoying whine when brightness is less than 100%. Default setting is 100%.

I have never heard it make any noise. I don't know whether this is to do with the offboard PSU or the almost total lack of control over the picture. I think it maybe has 4 or 5 brightness levels and that's it, period.

Either way, not a peep out of it in three years.

Brightness set at 90, no obvious whine, though there's a low level humming.

Viewsonic VP171b - dead silent when on with signal input(5 1/2 years old and still going strong... knock on wood). I do hear a faint high-pitched whine from certain directions if the monitor is on but is not receiving a signal.

Anybody have an HP LP2475w?

Whining noise, mostly very audible when there are a lot of similar patterns on the screen. Like output from a logfile in a big terminal window, repeating patterns on a website etc. But the noise is there constantly, just not that audible.

I've had a couple of these and they both emitted a faint hum.

The factory settings have the brightness set to 90%, which is way too bright. When I lower it below ~80% though I start to hear a slight hum from the monitor, which wasn't there at 90%. (The review at TFT Central said that once calibrated they had brightness at <20%.) I'm guessing it's the fluorescent tubes or their associated circuitry making the noise?

It's a very faint hum and I bet some people won't notice it. (The review at TFT Central didn't mention the noise.) Sometimes I think I'm too picky.

Input was DVI. Both of mine had manufacture dates of October 2008, built in Czech Republic.

Damnit, you've made me notice a type of noise I've never percieved before!

Benq G2400W, some faint noise at sub 100 brightness that changes character a lot when moving up and down the scale. For instance a tone percievable at level 50 in a normal viewing position changes to something much hard to detect at 45 or 55 even when turning the head.

Fortunately the noises are nowhere near the level that all CRT monitors has bugged me with in the days. I've always been sensitive to coil whine.

3x Samsung SyncMaster 940BW.

I use them at Brightness setting 31%, but even at 100% there is no difference (but no long term data at 100%)

No noise from the front. Very slight high frequency buzz with the ear 10cm from the back.

For all intents and purposes - very very quiet.

Soyo Topaz 24" monitor- 60hz hum that proved intolerable. Did not start until the monitor was warmed up.

Acer 25.5" x263Wbi- high pitched whine starting at 95% brightness, and increasing to max around 80% brightness (to 0). I was really upset with this one, got it for $250 at Costco, and was hoping to live with it, but it was still too loud.

Dell 1905FP- absolutely silent under all conditions I've experienced. It has set a standard that the earlier two failed to match.

Sony CPD-G520 CRT- a slight midrange hum when running, less annoying than Acer and Soyo monitors, but, perhaps that's because it was free and the other two I could return for cash... Generally tolerable, however, I do turn it off when not using the second monitor (the sony) for anything productive.

off-topic: the power adapter of the receiver/charger for my Logitech cordless desktop makes a high pitched whining noise.

I finally got tired of the buzz from my ~2004 Samsung 17" panel (maybe model 720) and got a nice new HP LP2475w. No noticeable buzz at any brightness level. I use a 35 foot (10 meter) DVI cable from bluejeans cables (works great at 1920x1200) to keep the PC in the basement below my first floor office room.
