Itching to upgrade video card

Post by ck8-04 » Sun Mar 22, 2009 9:22 pm

I've had my 8800GT since November of 2007 and I'm getting symptoms of upgrade fever. 8) My question is this: What is the fastest video card that can fit in an Antec Solo and be cooled adequately with a Thermalright T-Rad2 with an 800RPM Scythe S-Flex fan? I'm looking at the 4870, but it seems like this thing won't fare too well in the summer heat.

If it's the 8800GT, it might be worth waiting for the next bunch of Radeons; they're supposed to be shorter than the HD48xx series.

Unless you are playing games on high resolutions, you probably wont see much of a difference.

Length wise, I've never had a Solo but I had an old (read: longer) EVGA 9800GTX+ in a Sonata III because the power connectors were on the side instead of the back.

A 9800GTX+ will not fit in a Solo without cutting a chunk out of the hard drive cage.

The "new" 1GB GTS 250 (I hate Nvidia's name games) uses a shorter 9.5" PCB (same as the 8800/9800GT) and would fit. I'm holding out for the Radeon 4750, which supposedly will be almost as fast as a 4850. Up to you to decide what would be enough of an improvement over an 8800GT to justify spending money.
