Yup, those dense fins really seem to need a high power fan producing excellent cooling with lots of noise.

That card looks pretty cool. I bought the Galaxy 8800GT about a year ago, and that card also had a great non-reference design. Honestly, I think I'm starting to become a fan of their video cards. Great prices, great coolers, and smart card design.

Awesome. I've always hated videocard fans. They're small and loud. I wonder how many PCI/e slots that cooler takes up. ATX really needs to be updated to somehow give the videocard more space for larger coolers.

I honestly don't know either. I came up empty, hunting around. Figured I'd give it a little while longer, then hunt through the channel again and see if it had popped up anywhere.

anyone with a reference 260 tried to remove the plastic shell? a couple of people on other forums have claimed 15-20 degree temp drops when they do this and add a 92mm fan. i've been looking for instructions on how to do this but so far no dice.

people are more interested in silencing an exceedingly hot 4850 or higher card it seems. I almost wont go nvidia just on account of the small amount of experience this group has on silencing higher end nvidias.

a 260 gtx is probably the most optimal card out too in many regards.

Zotac is a cool brand too. I am going to get an nvidia this summer for the first time.

i've got a 55nm version and it is a great card. running it full core 24/7. nice acoustics at idle (hard to hear at all under the desk at my feet). runs cooler than the 65nm version that i had (see folding forums for more details). i want to bring the acoustics down even more, though, which is why i posted. i'll work on the shell once i'm over the hump in about two weeks.

maybe the ati cards have more aftermarket cooling options/slightly better game performance/a reputation for being more low power? The ppd in folding did it for me, but if i was just focused on games i might have gone ati with my most recent purchase. with folding, though, i've become more interested in wattage and power use than i used to be, so if i stopped folding now i'd still go with the 260 based on the reasons you listed rather than maybe a few more frames in a game that i wouldn't notice anyway.

Is a 260 far better than a ~80w 55nm "green" 9800GTX+? I guess there's plenty of choice as aftermarket coolers for this NV little sister.

not to answer for el jefe, but i think that it is if you game at higher resolutions (depending on the game, of course). for folding, definitely.
