Sapphire HD5570

Post by noisekiller » Wed Feb 10, 2010 10:19 am

Hy folks :)

I have just made a nice HTPC but would want a bit more power for games so i want to put the new HD5570

http://www.sapphiretech.com/presentatio ... 01&pid=317

in it but i keep on wondering...how quiet is it? I am used to passive stuff or D12SL-12 @5V...that is what i call quiet...I have no concern if it is not-so-quiet under load but in idle i expect it to be very, very quiet...any thoughts?

Hard to tell, no reviews yet, too new. 5570 for gaming tho? i do not think this is a card for gaming really. something like 5770 maybe? I am looking for the quietest 5570 myself. the Gigabyte has a larger fan, who knows.

Well i am not into hardcore gaming anymore. For my current games mi GF8300 IGP is sufficient, just want to put something in my PC so i cann play Starcraft 2/Diablo 3/Half Life 2 EP3 when they come out on a bit higher details. My current solution runs HL2, DOOM3/Quake 4 medium settings (i don't like the game to be to flashy) on Ubuntu/Wine @30FPS minimum (@70 max) @1024x768 and i'm fine with that...as i understand the 5570 is as powerful as 9600GT and i think it will be more than capable to do this things very good. If only would be a passive solution...

This is already only because of its video postprocessing abilities (deinterlacing quality etc). Gaming is not even mentioned.

I'm thinking of upgrading my HTPC to handle blu-ray with an HD5750 and possibly an Accelero S1 Rev2 cooler.

I currently use an Asus passive 4350 in my media center PC. It has a full size ATX case (Silverstone LC10-E http://www.silverstonetek.com/products/ ... E&area=usa) with a Core 2 E6600 down-clocked to 2ghz and a Scythe Shuriken low profile cooler.

Airflow is provided by the case's stock 120mm exhaust fan and Scythe's 100mm slipstream fan running at 7v and a Nexus 92mm low speed intake fan at the front. The WD 500 green power HDD is soft mounted in a Scythe Hard Disk Stabiliser. Finally, the power supply is an Enermax Pro82+ 425w.

According to reviews, this card has the processing power needed for blu-ray at 1080p with all the post processing needed for a brilliant image. However, I don't like the idea of putting an active graphics card in there. From 2m, the HTPC is inaudible. From 50cm the HDD is just about audible when seeking and you can just about make out a broadband whoosh coming from the fans.

I don't want to jeopardise this. So my question is whether I'll have enough airflow to keep the 5750 cool enough with the S1 and no other fans?

ncomben: Anandtech said 5570 is the perfect HTPC card (see link in previous post). Can you give me some links to reviews that say 5570 can't handle some video material that 5750 can?

The S1 should be able to handle the heat from a 5750 in passive mode, if it's properly (read tightly) mounted, and not running Furmark.
But AFAIK the mounting holes' position on 5750, 5670, 5570 cards are a PITA when you want to use the AC S1, you'd have to maime the S1 to fit.
And if you have a PCI slot or PCI-E x16 (PCI-E x1 might work OK) just below the gfx card slot, you won't be able to insert the gfx card, because of the S1.
PS. IMO your best bet is the 5670, the mounting holes are almost OK horizontally, but bad vertically (you need space below the gfx card).
