Cooling Asus 6850

Hello

I have recently made my system much quieter by suspending my hard drives and undervolting my fan (Scythe Slip Stream 1200).
However, now I can clearly hear my Asus 6850 (Direct CU V1).

In my country, I have two choices of cooler: AC Accelero S1 or AC Twin Turbo Pro (I cannot buy the Gelid Icy Vision here).
Both are the same price.

I want to know which is the better choice: TTP or S1? I have a spare SS 1200RPM lying around and I can undervolt that as well.

My case is a Fractal Design Define R2 with the two stock fans up front and an undervolted slip stream as the HSF.

I have found out how to attach a TTP to my card: viewtopic.php?f=13&t=60915&start=30

I'd still like an opinion on the Accelero S1, though.

Imo the Accelero S1, with very modest airflow, would be fine on the HD6850.

My 5770 has an S1 on it. Case is a P182, 120mm intake fan right in front of the card, and a 120mm exhaust fan at the back as normal. Both running at ~500RPM. With a room temp of around 25c, temps get up to the mid-80's in Furmark, and low 60's in a game like Crysis.

5770 TDP = 108W
6850 TDP = 127W

It's only a little hotter than a 5770:

A few months ago I upgraded to Crossfired 5770's, both with Accelero S1's, same case, and this time with the fans at 400RPM. While Furmark can take the cards up to 103/99c, Crysis only takes them up to 91/88c. If I prop the door open slightly and crank the fans up to 800RPM, max Crysis GPU temps are 75c/70c.

If two S1 5770's heating each other up is anything near comparable to a single S1 6850, then you shouldn't have a problem. :)

So you have no fan attached to the S1 itself?
What about VRMs though, wouldn't they suffer badly with such low airflow?
I have the Fractal Define R2 and I don't have an exhaust fan.

My current GPU temps at 25 degrees C ambient, are 32 at idle, 75 on furmark and 60 on Crysis.
At idle, I can hear a faint high-pitched noise (much higher than my fans), and at load, the card roars.

Too bad SPCR hasn't done a review of the Twin Turbo Pro yet. Although, with the great information on here, I doubt the editors can rush reviews.

Hi.

I was facing the same problem, but got the Accelero TTP. No problem mounting (you have to get the new version, with 5850 compatibiity sticker or the modified vrm set), and I almost forgot that i have the card (fans on auto).

Pictures and benches below. PM me please, if you got any questions, I'll be glad to answer them.

Specs:
Antec 300 (getting a define r3 in 2weeks) (stock fans@7v + low, enermax uctb 12@12 front/side)
400w ocz modxstream
phenom ii x3 720 -> mugen 2 (push-pull scythe slipstream 1200@7v)


Furmark: temps dropped by 20C, noise disappeared

Thanks for the tip, I'll make sure I get the new 5850 revision TTP.

May I ask if your card the ASUS version? Or is it another brand?

I'll put it on when I have time.

By the way, did you replace the stock VRM heatsink with the ones in the package, or did you keep it?
The stock VRM heatsink looks much better because it is pressure mounted with spring screws.
I'll see if I can keep mine on.

I've left over the stock one. It fits, it doesn't collide, it works so no reason to change it, right?

I just fitted the TTP onto my 6850. I had bend the stock VRM heatsink fins, like the person on the Asus 6850 discussion page.
The cooler is much quieter, but temps aren't that much better, maybe I should remount.

To quote myself:
Now put some new thermal paste on (or use the one on the heatsink). I needed to reapply once, because I did not properly tighten the screws in a crosswise manner the first time, I still got high temperature for some sensors (GPU-Z). This is described very well in the manual
I have to say my idle temps did not improve that much either, but load ones did ~10 ºC. But the sound improved a lot and that was the main goal. :)

What were your temperatures, though?
At full load, my GPU gets to 60 degrees, VRMs reach 65 (is this high?)

Idle (GPU 300 / Mem 300, 11.5b hotfix) I get ~46ºC with 22ºC ambient temperature.

At load I run mine at a GPU 950 / Mem 1000 (=standard mem) using MSI afterburner and that is stable during an hour of FurMark 1.8.2 in Xtreme burning mode:

That is hot, i bet the card haves no air in that r2. I've moved to a r3 yesterday, so I'll update this soon with new temps, lets see how much airflow dependant the temps are.

update: inside define r3, the temp drop happened when i opened the side doors :)

It's only 2degrees warmer, without any intake other than stock fractal stuff. VS fully fan mounted antec 300! Nice!
