GPU heatsink design - affecting CPU temperature when on idle

Hi, I'm buying GPU for occasional gaming, thinking of GTX 650 Ti Boost 2GB (or something in that price range).

Right now, I have "perfect" configuration. I'm using integrated graphics and I managed to keep PC noise under audible level even on full load (two fans under 500 RPM).

There are few important things:

My work doesn't profit from GPU acceleration, so GPU will idle when silence is important.
I don't want new GPU affecting CPU temperatures.
I want super silent card at idle.
I don't care for noise while gaming!


I was thinking, blower fan would be better for me - GPU with it's own exhaust sounds like a good idea. But there's the problem, I haven't seen a review of blower heatsink design being "silent" on idle, but many open air seem to be very quiet. For example EVGA cooler looks great, but it seems ASUS and MSI have perform way better (Tech Power Up reviews).

Does anyone have any experience, how much would (for example) ASUS card affect my CPU temperatures when in GPU is idle?

I have GTX780 on my PC, and doesnt blow air out, at least not most of it, but inside the case as it has a Artic Accelero Extreme III, given that i never tried it with the iGPU, i dont think it will make much a difference at idle, my GTX780 idles at 28C on 20C ambient, similar are the temp of the cores at idle. Nvidia GPUs downclock a lot, kinda like intels cpus, to very low mhz where they don't produce much heat, I honestly don't think should affect much at idle, on load will be a different story, where both coolers will dissipate heat in the case, so yoru case fans and cpu fan might increase over your current setup, but until you see it i dont think you need to worry much.

Since you like so much noctua, you could go overkill and get a Prolimatech MK-26 Multi-VGA Cooler + 2x NF-S12A PWM, it will manage a mid end card even at minimum rpms like your run yours atm.

Are you looking to add a gfx card to this setup? Blower cards just don't remove much heat and many OEM fanned cards are much quieter. I can't imagine gaming will affect your highest CPU temps more than a couple of degrees due to the ambient rise from the 134W TDP 650 Ti Boost...and even if it does, you've got plenty of headroom @ 62C. You might need to turn the front fan back on when gaming.

If your setup hasn't changed, don't get a blower style card, it'll never be quiet... Go for something with more fans and a larger cooler (I have had good luck with the Gigabyte Windforce coolers)

I must repeat, I don't game, but I'm thinking about starting , from time to time. My setup didn't change, this is my work computer.
My current temperatures barely reach 62°C with two fans on 470RPM. I just don't want GPU idle heat dissipation to affect CPU load temperatures.

I don't have many experiences with GPU's when it comes to silencing (I've never been a gamer), so I honestly cannot imagine how much GPU can affect CPU temperatures.

I guess blower fans are out of the question. MSE Twin Frozer cards are expensive (same price as refrence GTX 660) but they are supposed to be very quiet, Asus Direct CU are used by many silencers.. I don't have good experience with Gigabyte, when it comes to fan control (mobo & GPU).

Thank you for your help, as you can see, GPU's are really something new for me.

I don't think this card is powerful enough at idle to make much a difference in your system. Maybe one or 2 degrees, if that.

With that particular GPU having a 134W TDP an Accelero S1 Plus would be OK passive. Then you would always have a silent graphics card.

I haven't read the entire thread but I once tinkered with Accelero S1 Plus on my GTX 650. It will be perhaps fine to use Accelero S1 Plus with its rather indispensable appendix, aka, Turbo Module (120mm fan) but it will be absolutely catastrophic to use it for 134W TDP graphic cards without the Turbo Module. Arctic Accelero S1 Plus per se cannot handle more than 70W.

What gives you that idea? :? The original Accelero S1 was factory fitted passively by several AIBs on the 8800GT and 9800GT which had a TDP of 126W and still allowed room for overclocking. A 134W card with an S1 Plus will be no problem without the turbo module. These passive heatsinks are designed for far more than 70W!

I'm not interested in wading through all the related websites but I found out in the following site that 8800GT is rated to be 105W TDP grachics card and the temperature in full load state is reported to be 83.2 Celsius.

If you are not concerned about your GPU temperature exceeding 90 Celius (which, by the way, very likely for 134W TDP graphics card), I will give you that.

My typing mistake on TDP, I didn't mean 126W, I meant 125W! Here's a reference:

The S1 Plus is a slightly improved design and I really would have no qualms about installing one on a 134W card. If however you do want a little headroom then a 120mm fan of your choice at 5 Volt would make a better choice than the 'Turbo module'.

Ok, so GPU won't affect my CPU tempratures and my PC will stay inaudible when I work.

Now to the second problem, how loud are those GPU's? Could someone compare for me, how loud for example 650 Ti Boost from Asus (DirectCu 2) is on idle? I really can't imagine. Let's compare it with 2TB WD Green.. or Slipstreams or something that we all know :)
