They make noise, too.

I am currently running an Abit FX5200 DT with stock passive cooling, so far I am very pleased. Running NWN, Alice, Quake III and some others, very good so far.

(Not MikeC, but) I've seen one that my buddy was building a box with, the passive sink is pretty big. Here is a good shot of it.

You are right, this is based on others' comments -- from reviews and various discussion groups on electronic publishing. I know it is passive, from reviews. AFAIK, there's still no competition for Maxtrox in 2D quality / performance among retail VGA cards. That's the way it has been for the past 10 years (during which time I have used almost every Matrox card except for the Parhelia stuff) and it seems to continue.

tywem> don't ever start me again on matrox cards ;)

bsdgeek already testified and I can also that it is passively cooled.
my digicam is in repair now, so I cannot send a picture of me with the card, but it is passively cooled and looks oh so much better than a Radeon 9000Pro (same soft/screen).

Best quiet video cards, IMO:

Non3D: Matrox G450(for CRTs) or G550(for LCDs)
Low performance 3D: Geforce4 MX440 cards from MSI, Asus, or Aopen.
High performance 3D: ATI Radeon 9500 pro with ZM80C or waterblock.

The Matrox G450/G550 and GF4 MX440 are also low power FWIW.

Noticed Gigabyte 9200 128 on the list... recommended HS?

Post by rsramirez » Wed Oct 22, 2003 10:31 pm

What heatsink would be appropriate for the Gigabyte 9200 128?

Options I'd think of would be the Zalman ZM17CU. Is that adequate, or would one of the heat pipe versions be necessary (hopefully not!)

Inherited this from a friend.. too bad it's not one of the 9200s w/ the passive heatsink. Hey, it's free.

Thanks.

Couple more to add to the list:

Sapphire Radeon 9600 Atlantis - Passive with small/med HS
Connect3D Radeon 9600 - Passive with small/med HS

Can be read and seen at Custom PC (UK)

The AOpen Aeolus looks like it could be halfheight if the 15pin was removed and a different bracket was installed. I know most of their modems come with halfheight brackets, maybe they designed their card for that?

Don't know if it's been mentioned yet, but the Powercolor Radeons are half-height and TV equipped. IIRC, there's a 7500, 9200SE, and 9600SE available in low-profile format. Check Newegg.

correction

Post by TomMM » Mon Dec 22, 2003 9:33 pm

Some mentioned the ATI Radeon 7500LE, but that is incorrect. I have one and it has a fan. Maybe some are passive but no mine. It was quiet for about a month and then got real noisy.

They made 'em with and without fans. I have three of them and they're all passively cooled and have a DVI ouput too. A great budget card with excellent 2D for around $50 when they were available.

The ZM17CU sounds fine for your Radeon 9200 (non-pro I assume)...in fact, a heatsink like that on a Radoen 9200 should be somewhat overkill considering that I have a Sapphire version (Radeon 9200, 128MB) that requires only a small heatsink the size of a northbridge cooler. Therefore, I really wouldn't be surprised if a Zalman chipset heatsink ended up cooling your Radeon 9200 sufficiently. Hope this helps!

Should PCI and other be included or just AGP?

Either way I like the idea of dividing the video cards up like the PSUs are(half height/full height, 2D/3D, etc.) and organising in order of performance. Are there any passively cooled cards that require some airflow to be in the case? Would the air coming off the CPU fan cool it at all if there were no case/PSU fans?

The Sapphire Radeon 9800 XT Ultimate is almost fanless. It uses the Zalman cooler with a fan on the side. I dunno if the fan could be switched out, but it sounds pretty quiet here.

I finally ordered the Sapphire 9000 PCI! I think it was from newegg.

I don't think this one was mentioned yet

ATI AIW 7500

I just ripped this out of my HTPC because it wouldn't recognize my TV after upgrading the drivers. I replaced it with my GF4 ti200 and noticed a loud humming noise. Went back to look at the 7500 AIW and sure enough, no fans while the ti200 (made by BFG) has one loud little sucker.

I was browsing here for solutions for the ti200 when I found this thread. Wish I found it sooner since I bought a 5700u for my game pc (to replace the ti200) and I think I would have been better off keeping the ti200 in the game pc and getting a 5200u with no fan and DVI for the HTPC.

and for the Europeans.

club3d has a Radeon 9600SE with 128mb ram, DVI, VGA and TV-out for slightly over 110 euro in the netherlands.

Got one over the weekend and am quite pleased with it.

Note that Ati 9600 based cards are AGP 4x/8x only.

You can't put these in a AGP 2x system. (Like mine, running Celeron 1200 on a Abit BH6 slot-1 board using a Powerleap adapter)

While the Nvidia FX5200 based series may have crappy performance, these cards support AGP 2x. (And will likely run the Longhorn graphics layer in full DX9 mode)
