They make noise, too.

Just red it. Seems to be a bit more power hungry than current gtx980 180W.

Yeah, the 180W TDP is 15W more than the GTX 980...but it's performance completely trashes the 250W GTX 980 Ti.

Gotta put the numbers into context for them to have meaning...

='( I must resist until the GTX1080ti, but your comments are not helping, specially the itallics, =P

A little mouse told me that Steve build needs a GTX1070 for WOW Legion.

Tell your little mouse to go to hell :) I bet my GTX 760 will work just fine @ 1080p in Legion.

Actually it may be not.
Not to mention it's not an apple to apple comparison: set aside any performance consideration, the GTX 1080 is equipped with 8Gb VRAM instead of 4Gb VRAM.

I guess Pascal is going to be a though challenge for Polaris/Vega...

While most people are excited about the release of GTX 1080 and confirmed specifications of GTX 1070, I'm much more curious as to whether GTX 1060 would rely on additional PCI-E power or not. Not to mention such a graphics card will make cable management easier, as far as my experience goes, any graphics card tapping into additional PCI-E power is not suitable for HTPC or small-ish mini ITX builds because it is simply too challenging (in fact, almost impossible) to make them sufficiently silent when the total power consumption exceeds 70-80 watts.

Since GTX 960 has 1024 CUDA cores with TDP of 120W and GTX 980 has 2048 CUDA cores with TDP of 165W, it looks like the relationship between the numer of CUDA cores versus the total power consumption is sub-linear. Assuming that GTX 1060 has the half of CUDA cores of GTX 1080 which has a TDP value of 180W, it saddens me that we are unlikely to see GTX 1060 not reliant on PCI-E power. The TDP figure of GTX 1060 will be approximately 120/165*180=131 watt plus the additional power consumption caused by GDDR5.

I speculate that only GTX 1050 or GTX 1050Ti will be able to powered solely by the motherboards. They will certainly have much more prowess than GTX 750 or GTX 750Ti but I prefer to go for GTX xx60 series partly because I have the impression that Nvidia does not care much about GTX xx50 series, e.g., poor fan control functions or absence of PWM headers and VRAM temperature sensors.

I'd expect the 1050 series to be the ones that forgo the PEG connector.

GTX 1080: Pretty awesome idle and 2D power draw....especially with 8GB of VRAM.

GTX 1070: Due out on June 10 and spec's are leaking. 5W higher TDP than the GTX 970...but it also has 8GB VRAM vs 4GB on the '970. I think this'll be the part to watch for "moderately" priced 2160p gaming. Intro price is high, but if AMD gets it's act together, the high end Polaris will compete against this part. So, street price will probably drop to $350..maybe less...it'll be interesting to watch how badly vendors rape the early adopters of both the 1070 and 1080.

Under the capitalistic regimes, early adopters are doing great service to the society by spending money. It's sort of a sacrifice and indirect altruism, as a matter of fact. I'll be probably awaiting the release of GTX 1060 by the likes of ASUS and MSI though I'm unsure of my patience, which I suppose is the hardest part. The rumor has it that GTX 1060 will be released no earlier than September 2016. On the other hand, excessive patience is not always helpful in this mortal and ephemeral life.

It looks like GTX 1060 would perform similar to GTX 970, which has been incredibly satisactory to me so far in terms of graphics prowess.

I think the
GTX1050 will be enough for 1080 @ 60hz
GTX1060 will be enough for 1440 @ 60hz
GTX1070 will be enough for 1080 @ 144hz
GTX1080 will be enough for 1440 @ 144hz
GTX1080Ti will be enough for 4K @ 60hz

Im a little worried seeing how the GTX1080 reaches 80C while gaming easily on the reviews... and makes me wonder how will GTX1080Ti heat. Might be better to go with 1080 that has GDDR5x, but still is a standard design to apply an MK26 and still end up with quiet computing, probably around 75C hard gaming. The GTx1080ti.... might use the HBM memory, that might make the Mk26 not work, and if it heats more than the 1080 and no way to go aftermarket.

I want to see how MSi cooler does on the 1080 to decide, else the only way to go with something like 1080Ti will be to wait for a special edition like the Lightning.

I'm not worried about GTX 1080 and 80C load temps with the stock cooler. The stock GTX 980 was the same and the MSI Gaming and Asus Strix versions were 66C.

Price, however, look like ridicolously predatory (Intel monopoly anyone?), here start today at 819 euros (924 USD) a pop...

Pascal is looking pretty disappointing from a noise and cooling perspective. The 1080 is a 180w GPU with an improved cooler but all the reviews I've looked at show it's as difficult to cool as the 250w 980 Ti with similar noise readings, temperatures, and fan speeds. It seems around 25-30% faster on average in games which I guess is decent but I was hoping for more.

I guess that's more transistors on a smaller die for ya. I wonder how much of it is due to the high clock speeds and how AMD's architecture will compare on this node.

I also noticed that Nvidia doesn't specify the TDP of the 1080 on their site which they've done with every previous GPU. Cheeky.

well guys if you are only gaming at 1080p you can always purposefully undervolt and underclock the 1080 to a pretty low clock speed and rly get the heat and noise under control. I image 1080 @ 60fps would allow you to heavily underclock the 1080. Then you always got all that extra power in reserve for when games get more and more demanding.

i'm currently gaming on an i7-980x at 4.26ghz + sapphire fury tri-x OC with all but 2 CU unlocked at 1140mhz and 1440p 60hz. I keep talking about upgrading but I keep wanting to wait for the next best thing and it never ends :/

I've never been a fan of spending $600+ for a video card when a $200-250 will do. I'd rather replace the $200-250 card with another $200-250 card a few years down the road. Better payback than going big and hoping it'll last.

Im really looking forward to see what Asus and MSI can do with the new tech. Especially the more "modest" 60-models and Pascal

Btw, I can imagine a lot of misunderstandings coming up when people start talking about 1080, unspecified :D

It seems this time MSI will release their GTX1080 Lightning and not wait for the Ti version as they did with the GTX980/980Ti.

Galaxy GTX 1070 HOF and MSI GTX Lightning 1080 show

Im really intersted on the lightning, if its like the past gen that was the quietest GTX980Ti according to TechPowerup MSI GeForce GTX 980 Ti Lightning 6GB

Computer Base reviewed the Asus GTX 1080 Strix OC Edition, so I started the 1080 review compilation thread.

First look of the 1070 is impressive. 970 to 1070 jumps two gpu's in performance (similar to GTX 980 Ti) instead of one (GTX 980).
