GTX 1080 Review Compilation Thread

Post by CA_Steve » Tue May 31, 2016 8:06 am

In brief: high end 1440p/mid 2160p, 180W TDP (OC'ed cards have 200W and over power targets). HDMI 2.0b and Display Port 1.4(ready). Requires one 8-pin PCIe Graphics power connector, but OEM designs may use more. Dimensions stated as: a" x b" x c" are from mfgr websites - others are from reviews.

4/26/17: Nvidia updated card design with faster VRAM...which led to new SKUs typically with PLUS in the name. Minimal upgrade in gaming framerates.

Not appealing, considering its noiser than the GTX980 Strix (according to the graph), and the GTX970 Strix was noiser on load than the MSI gaming. Will wait on others to see how it goes.

The silent mode drops it to below the 980 Strix. Have to wait and see how the non-OC edition Strix performs.

Hopefully the silent mode doesn't throttle the 4k performance much if you have adequate cooling. Otherwise this may put a hamper on my 4k silent build with the 1080 gtx. I got everything else ordered, just waiting till June 4th to order the asus strix gtx 1080 (not available yet in US, oddly enough you can buy it elsewhere).

The "silent" mode for the Strix OC is still a slight overclock from the reference card. So, if you liked the reference card benchmarks... Also, why not wait for the other card reviews to come out before making the purchase decision?

AFAIK stocks are limited everywhere. A local (EU) shop announced the cards with bravado and a 50% upmark, then told over the phone they'll have the cards from the end of June. A store managed to get 5-10, and of course sold out immediately.

Here a review Steve, Guru3d MSI GeForce GTX 1080 GAMING X 8G review - Graphics Card Noise Levels, while i dont trust them in terms of noise measurment, seems promising,
Once the card is in a fully stressed status (in-game) it touches only 38~39 dBA. The card under stress remains very silent. We also did not hear any coil whine/noise.

Cooling & Noise Levels

The reference design (founder editions) of the GTX 1080 are set at an offset threshold of 80 degrees C. Once the GPU gets warmer the card will clock down / lower its voltage etc to try and keep the card cooler, that's throttling and it part of the design. MSI however throws in a cooler that manages roughly 500 to 600W of cooling performance. It is a really good one, so good that up-to a degree or 60 on the GPU, this card remains passive and thus inaudible. Once the fans kick in, you can expect to hover at the 70 Degrees C marker, with seriously demanding games. Please do note that you will need proper ventilation inside your chassis to achieve that number. So MSI shaved off a good 10 Degrees C over reference. Noise wise, we can’t complain about cooling whatsoever. Expect sound pressure values in the 38~39 dBA range at max under load and warm circumstances. That's measured 75 CM away from the PC. This means you can barely hear the card while using it
I really would like to see SPCR get an MSI GTX1080 Gaming and Asus GTX1080 Strix to see a head up noise wise.

Added. Lots of sku's from MSI...and can't get a backplate without the LED bling. yeesh.

An aside - did you see EVGA's workaround for top mounted PEG connectors?

I am happy about the mention of no coil whine on the MSI Gaming X card though. My 970 was horrendous, and my 980 Ti whines almost inaudibly when stressed. On a slightly different note, EVGA claims that their updated ACX 3.0 cooler runs 10°C cooler and 30% quieter. But, that is subject to change since they have yet to pin down safe factory overclocks as of now, and those numbers are likely rounded up and cherry picked, but any improvement would be great, since the fans on my 980 Ti SC+ have a grating tonality once the card hits 78-79°C and have very prominent air noise once they start spinning after 50°C, and I have F@H running at full power all day, keeping the card at around 75-80°C during summer.

If there were any reason to choose EVGA over MSI for me in the case of the 1080s it would be that the software used to shut off the LEDs (MSI gaming app) won't conflict with Afterburner or PrecisionX. I love afterburner, but MSI forcing the, IMO, shoddy and oversimplified gaming app on us if we want lighting control is dumb. EVGA would likely integrate lighting control into PrecisionX, which is on par with Afterburner in terms of granularity, with a few notable exceptions however.

I would think the lighting power plug will be separate from the fan plug to control the effects...so, disable the lighting by pulling the plug :)

True. If and when I get my hands on one, I will look into disconnecting it, and I will give my report on whether or not it requires anything to be taken apart to get at the plug.

Waiting for an actual acoustic review, but the Palit/Gainward one seems nice from this review (german): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n0lj0nmKHYw . According to the reivewer, the quietest 1080 they've tested so far and I'm liking the Fan%/RPM. Looks like it may be similar to the good acoustic performance of the Palit 980ti.

Techpowerup MSI GTX 1080 Gaming X 8 GB
Idle fan noise is fantastic as the card completely turns its fans off in idle (up to 60°C).

In gaming the card is also extremely quiet, reaching as low as 31 dBA, which enables nearly noise-free gaming, even with a power house such as the GTX 1080.

NVIDIA reference design heatsink, which looks good, but fails to keep the card from running at its full potential due to throttling beyond 82°C. MSI's new TwinFrozr heatsink scores full marks here. It keeps the card at around 72°C, even with heavy gaming, and at the same time the fans are much quieter than on the reference. The MSI's fans are actually unbelievably quiet, given the card's performance.
31db seems pretty solid, 2db higher than MSI GTX980Ti lightning, i think its going to be a very good option, but i still have an MK26... just in case.

Intersting, 2db higher than MSI.

One thing that its not accounted is that most sites test on their test bench, our cases most of the time have the case fans at low rpms, thus the air flow is not as good, and its important to see how this cards behave on less air than what open bench can give.

Two lesser-known brands, Palit and Gainward GTX 1080, "sound" amazing according to the following video:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n0lj0nm ... Vba2WUn5Mg

(Watch from 14:00 for the Palit card)

The fan rpms are around 900-1000 rpms, which are incredibly low figures. They are undeniably "THE" most quiet Pascal graphics cards so far, expectably due to their gigantic heatsinks, taking up to 2.5 slots.

Computer Base has them on hand...no review with details, yet.

Also, did you see Techpowerup's little note on how Asus and MSI are shipping them review units that are clocked beyond the retail units? Reminds me of the cell phone industry's practice of upclocking units when they see a known benchmark test. :)
