They make noise, too.

RTX 2080 Ti review compilation thread

Post by CA_Steve » Mon Aug 20, 2018 7:43 pm

In brief: 2160p performance 30-50% faster than GTX 1080Ti. 260W TDP, but OEM stock OC'ed cards will use more at stress loads. HDMI 2.0b and Display Port 1.4a. Supports dual link DVI-D but not analog. Requires two 8-pin PCIe Graphics power connector - OEM cards may have more. Dimensions stated as: a" x b" x c" are from mfgr websites - others are from reviews. Idle and Multi-monitor idle bug fixed (the latter via driver version 416.81). Now uses 12 and 21W, respectively. (was 58W for multi-monitor idle).

Currently, the Asus STRIX OC with quiet BIOS setting is the quietest card (and hottest) of the lot.

NDA was lifted, some reviews. Summary Asus seems the best noise wise, specially with the dual bios with one being quiet oriented, disappointed on MSI seems loud specially the TRIO for such a massive cooler.

TechPowerup
NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2080 Ti Founders Edition 11 GB Review - 29dBA idle / 37dBA load
MSI GeForce RTX 2080 Ti Gaming X Trio 11 GB Review - 0dBA idle / 36dBA load
MSI GeForce RTX 2080 Ti Duke 11 GB Review - 0dBA idle / 34dBA load
ASUS GeForce RTX 2080 Ti STRIX OC 11 GB Review - 0dBA idle / 31dBA load (with the quiet bios)

GURU3D
GeForce RTX 2080 Ti Founders review - 37dBA idle / 43dBA load
MSI GeForce RTX 2080 Ti Gaming X TRIO review - 29dBA idle / 37dBA load
Asus GeForce RTX 2080 Ti RoG Strix review - 29dBA idle / 33dBA load (with the quiet bios).

Not that many custom cards reviews out, probably will start showing this week as reviewers get more time to play with the cards.

Tom's Hardware France has tested MSI RTX 2080 Ti Gaming X TRIO and had a different result of noiseness from others sitwes like TPU and Guru3D: https://www.tomshardware.fr/articles/te ... 850-8.html

Now what, ASUS Strix RTX 2080 Ti OC or MSI RTX 2080 Ti Gaminx TRIO for quiet system?

35, 36, and 37dB measured by the three sites for the MSI Trio. <shrug> Not a huge difference considering they all use different test set ups. When compared directly to the Asus Strix (silent mode), the latter is noticeably quieter (by 4 to 5dB on the same sites).

I dont own a MSI RTX2080Ti gaming trio, and all my comments are subjective as its what i percieve, no measurements or real numbers to back my claims, so take it with a grain of salt.

I recently bought an MSI RTX2080Ti DUKE (didnt go for the trio because of techpowerup) and an Asus RTX2080Ti STRIX (advanced, not the OC version reviewed by techpowerup, but very similar its probably just the clocks).

The Asus is a very quiet GPU, even quieter than my Asus GTX1080Ti strix, the tone of the fans is much better at high rpms (seems like mini NB eLoops), but only if you use the QUIET BIOS, outside my case i tested the P MODE (normal bios) and the fan curve is way too aggresive, it sustains the GPU below 67C under Heaven for 1h on an open bench, but this is because the fans go into 1950rpms, they are loud and noticeble at that rpms, but not as loud as my Asus GTX1080ti at the same rpms, the fans are much more tolerable, usually the old design past 1500rpms becomes noticeable and close to 2k goes jet mode. Now the new RTX2080Ti Strix with the bios on Q MODE, its totally different fan curve, even at 1440p heaven the fans never passed 1350rpms, its to me inaudible inside the case, the expense is it goes to 78C on well ventilated case (low rpms but a lot of fans). To be honest, i would like a little more rpms, i would gladly take 1500rpms for lets say sub 75C temperatures, i have to do more testings, specially with asus gpu fan headers toward my bottom fans to see the gains.

Now the MSI RTX2080Ti DUKE, i would say its on the middle (subjectively), between the Asus with P MODE and Q MODE, on Heaven for 1h the fans go to 1750rpms and the card is sustained at 73C, its audible at those rpms on an open bench, but acceptable (for me), inside a PC i just barely finish the build, i haven't done testing on a quiet night to know for sure, but i feel its going to be fine.

Without a doubt Asus RTX2080Ti STRIX is the quietest high end GPU i have ever tested (without modding it, the bios switch is so convenient), now i bet with MSI Afterburner you can set fan curves on the GAMING TRIO to maybe match it, i just like to run as minimalistic as i can, i don't like to depend on software, reason i run my setups with bios fan control and also i like my GPUs to be that way also. The only downside on the Asus, and probably for most its not, its that it comes with 2x HDMI + 2 DP, not allowing a triple monitor setup with 144hz, only reason i went with the MSI for the other setup.

your post inspired me to try out the strix, although the 2080 version. my brief experience seems to line up with your opinion of the 2080ti version--pretty good temperatures at reasonable fan speeds which don't make a ton of noise. however, when my card's fans turn on to any speed, there's a very noticeable (to me) vibration/humming type noise. I don't have enough knowledge to know if its a bearing, but something makes an underlying sound that ruins the product for me. it's possible I have a bad card and this noise is harder to pickup above ~1400rpm, but my target speed/noise is lower than that. unless there's something obvious when I pull it out of the system it's headed back to the store. it's quite the bummer, especially since I was so proud of myself for squeezing it into an ncase m1

Have you tried putting your finger on the card to see if it's a transmitted vibration to the case?

I've stuck my hands everywhere I can manage without getting a finger sliced--all sides of the case, anything that's unattachable, along the gpu backplate, the accessible portions of the shroud, the pci-e support bracket. Nothing seems to be shaking externally to the card. I do notice that if I ramp the fans up manually (e.g. going from zero to manual 30% will cause the fans to hit 1600rpm before dropping to 1100rpm), the noise goes away as the fans are spinning up. I can't get to the card's face as it's very close to a case panel, but I don't think there's any turbulence from that. I can definitely localize the noise to being in the bottom half of the case (gpu adjacent) but it's hard to pinpoint beyond that as everything's pretty close.

Wow, that is crazy, I have found someone who has the same problem as me with ROG Strix RTX 2080 OC.

I was really happy to install the new card and switched to the Quiet-BIOS. I use the noise damped Fractal Design Define C. And I was very disappointed about the fan noise. Nothing seems to vibrate for real but the card is much louder than my old card MSI GTX 1080 Gaming X.

I cannot follow up with all these reviews which said that the Strix at Q-BIOS is the quietest RTX card. Because my Strix card is a pure fail. The fans can be turned manually by fingers, no noise. But the fan motors seem to be very very bad.

At closed case you can hear that brummy sound, fans @1200rpm.

Finally I returned the card.
