aiw 9600 pro cooled passively?

Post by AzN jonzOrz » Tue Sep 09, 2003 5:20 pm

would it be possible to use a hybrid of a small zalman heatpipe system on the front and the larger one on the back? would the cooling be sufficient? does thet aiw 9600 have the proper holes required?

I don't know about the AIW 9600pro and zalman combo (probably will work if it fits) but I will tell you that I have a normal 9600pro (non AIW) and it works perfectly by just unplugging the stock HSF on it, though I do have a undervolted fan blowing lightly from overhead using a zalman fan bracket. Point is the 9600 and 9600pro are pretty easy to cool and I don't think the AIW variants are any different.

I know this is a slightly different card (with a different HS), but I tested out my AIW 9000 Pro with a temperature gun and with the fan after running 3DMark for about 1/2 an hour it was 50C, then without the stock fan (and no other direct cooling except the case Panaflos running about 9V) it got to 63C and still climbing. No problems with running the software though, I just didn't want to test it to destruction!!!

So although that doesn't answer your question  I wouldn't just unplug the fan without some kind of direct airflow over the HS.

The Sapphire 9600 Pro Ultimate edition (or something like that:) is run with the small Zalman VGA-cooler only, so I´d say you have more than required to cool that card passively:)
