Hi benimaru, Welcome to SPCR!

He must be talking about using the 5V lead off the power supply. I assume the video card is feeding the fan 12V.

The easiest way to do this would be to buy a 4-pin to 3-pin adapter, like this one, and then switch the red and yellow wires on the female 4-pin connector, so that the 3-pin connector is being fed by the power supply's 5V line. Then, you can plug the video card fan lead onto the 3-pin connector, perhaps after trimming a little plastic off the connector. As a precautionary measure, wrap tape over the male 4-pin connector to make sure you don't plug anything else into it--devices that expect 12V and 5V don't like getting 5V and 12V.

So from your reply it seems that there is no such thing as a 2pin to 4pin converter. that's too bad, someone should hook one up.

i'm gonna see if any local places have that part you linked to... otherwise i'll order it and post about the experience.

after that the only thing left to do is replace the insanely whiney WD 40gb drive. It sounds like a Dremel tool.

Well thanks to you guys pointing me in the right direction, I decided to get a zalman multi connector that took a regular 4pin power connector and branched to 2 5v and 2 12v leads. although the product is for 3 pin fans, each connector only has two pins, so it was really pretty simple to jam the geforce3 fan onto it.

upon firing up my computer, i was really really pumped when i didnt hear the vga fan at all... it just spins very quietly now. that combined with a cheap 80gb seagate drive fixed my dustbuster computer up real nice.

and you're right zyzzyx, i can still hear it a little bit, and sometimes i do think that i'd like to replace the case fan to try for absolute silence... but you know, i'm pretty psyched that i can even think when next to this computer now.

i guess that's good enough.
