Buzzing noise from Shuttle MN31N Motherboard not mechanical
i have a shuttle mn31n and it makes a buzzing noise. its not mechanical i have stoped every fan momentairlly to check. i allreayd rma'd one back to newegg that also made the noise and had stability issues as well. the werid thing is it only makes the noise in windows (also does it durring the windows install). it only makes the noise when the cpu is idel.
i have tried different power supplies.
anyone else have this board? do you have this problem? do you have the board and not have this problem?
what do you think it is

well i found where it's coming from those two inductors
i have tried other video cards sound cards instead of integrated but it doesnt make a difference.
mike you wouldnt think i would be able to fix it by replacing those would ya?
how would i find out whatever i need to, to be able to replace them
i would not be afraid if some one walked me through it.

Umm, I don't know, I have never tried such a thing, but somehow, I doubt it. Typically, that type of buzzing seems to be a design flaw. It might be amelioriated by better quality parts, but you'd need full details on the specs of those inductors. Even if the board was brand new, I think you'd be hard pressed to get that info. There must be someone in these forums who is totally electronics savvy who can toss out some ideas about reducing inductor hum?mike you wouldnt think i would be able to fix it by replacing those would ya?
I had the same problem with my MSI K7N2 Delta-L motherboard. Apparently some Nforce 2 motherboards get coil whine if the 12v aux connector from the power supply is plugged in. I had to RMA the board, got a new one and didn't plug in the connector... no problems yet. I e-mailed MSI about the problem at the time and they said that it is a fairly common problem with the N-force 2 chipset and once it starts it won't stop. However, the board will work just fine without the connector plugged in.
From what I can tell all recent AMD boards have the 12v connector. I've had quite a few recent boards and the having the connector doesn't seem to do much aside from cause problems (from what I can tell). I've under and over clocked everything. My current Delta-L is overclocked (and undervolted ) and I have no problems without ever plugging the 12v in.
oh apparantlly its not the same way on the shuttle mn31n i emailed them about it and they responded "We have never heard that kind of problem happen on our MN31N"
any way mine wont stop crashing without the 12v atx cable first i thought that maybe the extra power from the connector helps with the integrated video so i put in my old geforce 2 in and it still crashed so i ended up borrowing my friends psu which did have that connector and now it works fine so i bought an adapter and use it with my psu now.
it just still makes that noise
i also read in amdforums that people had problems on this motherboard till they plugged in the 12v atx then they all magically dissapear so appartantlly some motherboards need this and some do not.

i just noticed that my +12v as reported by my mn31n motherboard in bios setup is 9volts without the connector but the proper 12 with itlucienrau wrote:I had the same problem with my MSI K7N2 Delta-L motherboard... However, the board will work just fine without the connector plugged in.
what is the msi owners without the connector?
i never found a real cure for the problem besides buying another motherboard
the closest i could get to quieting it was desoldering the chokes and coating them entirelly with the high temp silicon stuff and then obviouslly soldering them back on. but it never got rid of all the noise just made it a little quieter but for me it certainly wasnt quiet enough.
i say sell it to someone who doesnt care about noise or wont hear it over a whiny hard drive, retail cooling fan and noisy power supply
i myself was going for quiet and high pitched noises had to go first because they were the most annoying to me. i bought a asus a7n8x deluxe refurb off newegg for about 60 bucks without accesories.
you just have to keep on checking back with newegg if you want to get one it seems they get new stuff that they say is refurb every day.
i was going to just get a motherboard with different looking chokes but i ended up just getting the same motherboard my friend had that i knew to put off no noise, at least i think it puts off no noise. i never thought that i would have to combat the noise of electrical components but here i am doing it now.
the more quiet you make your computer the more noises reveal themselves.

the other thing you can try if you have the time is get an rma from shuttle and send it back
i had sent a couple emails to support and they said that it shouldnt be making the noise and to get an rma and send it back and they would replace the chokes but i had modified my board at that point so i didnt send it in.
