ATI 9600XT Question?
I just got myself a 9600XT and I've been reading that it's apparently a pretty cool running card (Something about ati using the 0.13 process). Question is...how cool is it and could I get away with cooling it passively with a big heat sink (Like some people have done with the 8500).
Should be no problem. The 9600 series barely gets warm compared to the 9700/9800 cards.
The Zalman ZM50 can handle it no problem, the larger ZM80 series designed for the 9700+ cards would be overkill, but there isn't much price difference between the 50 and 80, so its just that much more effective.
Many of the slower clocked 9600 cards (non pro or xt) come stock with little passive heatsinks. Saphire even makes a pro model with a passive heatsink, and it's considerably smaller than the Zalman models.

You should be able to cool it passively with a good heatsink.
Sapphire has a passively cooled 9600XT model with pretty small heatsinks on both sides of the core and they are connected with a heatpipe.

I have the 9600XT set up with the ZM80. It definetly produces a little bit of heat, you can tell it just based on the agressiveness of the stock HSF. I put a 5V L1A just mounted on the side using some long screws, and putting them in the channel that is on the side. Also with this configuration you can turn on the overdrive feature and have no worries at all.
