Opinions on IBM ThinkCentre S51 wanted
Hi,
I have seen the discussion about the ThinkCentre S50. Now I am looking at the next IBM BTX-Based system, the S51. It is similar, yet not as small as the S50.
Does anyone know how noisy the S51 is? I have no IBM dealer within reach to test it myself. And also, it would be nice to have a report on how quiet it is in a home environment.
Thanks in anticipation!
Cheers
Jurgen

I have an S50 at work, and it is the loudest computer I have ever heard. At idle it is moderately loud, but the fan ramps up to 2 different higher speeds when the CPU starts getting used. Sounds like a vacuum cleaner or a jet engine, depending on CPU utilization.
I know you are talking about a S51, but I would not touch any ThinkCentre with a ten foot pole.

The S50 line covers a range of processor speeds (like all IBM models), so maybe my processor is a bit faster, generates more heat, and makes the fan ramp up faster. Also, my company uses MacAfee anti-virus, which is a CPU hog, and causes the CPU to ramp up often (and causes the fan to ramp up also). But I guarantee you that a quieter PC can be had, although I don't know if you find a quieter one that is as small as the S50/S51.

hi
okay I trust your opinion. I probably supposed that IBM had found a way to make the system quiet despite stepping up CPU speeds.
Hmm. I want a quiet and small Linux machine to use as a web / fax server, so CPU speed doesn't really help me.
I like the IBM designed Desktops, but it seems to be impossible to find out how loud they are, without buying one.
Thanks again,
Jurgen

If you are willing to get a 2.2 GHz Celeron CPU, it "might be" quiet enough. However, IBM motherboards are proprietary and I would check their website for Linux drivers. In the specs I saw, it does not say anything about supporting Linux, and got the message "No downloads or drivers found" when searching for Linux drivers on the S51 8098-11M. Of course, even though they have no Linux drivers, it is possible that Linux will run fine on the machine.

Select the downloads and drivers and select the model you want.

Hi again,
I found it should be pretty compatible at least with the SUSE or RedHat distributions:
http://www.keylabs.com/linux/results/ib ... 1-3au.html
But as a computer that basically sits next to my living room, running 24/7 working as a fax / voice machine / email server plus a testing webserver for my home office, it's probably too loud and also a bit of overkill. I just like the design. Well, now I could also go for a Mac mini which should be quiet enough, but I don't know about buying a G4 CPU with less than one year to go before Intel Mac Minis hit the market...
If you have any other ideas (HP, Dell, Gateway, Fujitsu-Siemens), who might offer a quiet Linux-ready system, please let me know.
Cheers
