shuttle SX58H7
im looking into a sff i7 rig and wondering how good is this shuttle for near silence operation
The killer on the shuttles have always been the power supply. With 40mm fans, you're always going to have that high pitched fan whine.
The x58 moves to a 50mm fan, but that really isn't a whole lot better.
The ICE cooling system uses 92mm fans, and these are PWM in the newer machines, so that should be OK, or at least replaceable with a quieter unit.
Shuttle also sells the PC62 power supply which is a 200W external brick with a DC/DC converter internally (think picoPSU style). This eliminates the power supply fan, which is a good thing, but is limited to 200W.
As long as you keep your power budget under 200W, this makes for a reasonable system.
