Has anyone tried using fluorinert as part of thier PC cooling solution? If so what was your setup, how well did it perform and approx. what was the cost?

There was one I read about, but don't remember the link. Of course you have to have a sealed system in the area where you are using the fluid.

For the record I got my 5 gallon pail of Mineral oil for $30. Find a place that sells industrial lubricants and ask them for the lowest viscosity highest-purity Mineral Oil they've got. Most place will label it as "Turbine Oil"

I'm not sure about the actual freezing point, in fact I don't even see one listed on the MSDS for Mineral Oil (it says "Freezing Point: NO DATA")

The real issue is the viscosity. As oils get colder they get thicker, at some point the oil gets so thick that whatever pump you're using will seize up and die. Any below about 10°C and you're talking syrup-like viscosity.

I'm sure somewhere out there there's a formula to determine the viscosity of the oil at any given temperature (Although I can't find one right now) If you could determine that then you could use the specs from the manufacturer of your pump to see what the max viscosity the pump can handle. Then you'll have a way of determining how cold you can make the oil.

How are you planning on chilling the oil anyway?
